How are they making these ALE files? In Media Composer or MediaLog? If so, then they should just send the project/bins. If in another product, then you need to merge the ALE into the media. If that is the case, then the following column headers need to match exactly:

    Tape (or)
    Source File
    Start
    End

Look for ALE and Merge in the Avid User Guide.

I have done both LUT, CDL and LUT + CDL dailies with v7 with varying results – I think the concept of “LOG” dailies with color as metadata is very close. Most of my feedback in beta was around third party metadata applications to LOG type essence, be it camera originals or DNxHD.

The soft spots in all of this is the process by which the metadata gets applied to the essence. I very easily created LOG DNxHD 36 and applied CDL as metadata and for the most part if worked. One main issue right now in this release is that ASC SAT does not work –

LUT description is the area that falls apart, and does not work as part of an ALE process. I am told that AAF does/will at some point but have not seen that to be true at this time.

Avid recommends transcoding first (if you feel you need to) at the original camera rate should you ever need to go back to your original sources. If you were to transcode directly from AMA link in the 23.976 you get a big warning how you are creating new media and won’t have any link back to original sources.

I don’t know if your 29.97 is a progressive video stream or interlace, but start with 1080i/59.94 and AMA Link. If you need to transcode for performance or other reasons, then transcode while in the matching frame rate project (1080i/59.94 in this scenario). Then open that bin in the 1080p/23.976 project.

Mix and Match will usually do the right thing removing the pulldown frame/field from a stream with pulldown. If it misses, you can go go in and change the cadence till it’s right.

It’s most likely because it is recorded 24p (23.976) with 2:3 pulldown into a 29.97 video stream. AMA to the clip in a 1080i/59.94 or 1080p/29.97, then open the bin in your 23.976 project.
