  • How are they being brought into the Media Composer? Wrapped in QickTime? Import? AMA?

In my conversations with LA based facilities catering to television finishing, that mastering at 4K is an additional 25%-30% more budget wise, but would be at last 100% or more if they had to do a 4K master down the road. This is due to additional cost of archival retrieval from all different service providers, and trying to remember why some things were done a certain way for some processes (mainly VFX), etc. It was also noted that the budget increase was when working with R3D and XAVC – other 4K formats, even ProRes are big files and the costs is in moving them, storing them, etc.

But you will see more 4K finishing because it is just easier to do it now when you look at what it takes to do it later.

Yikes! Difficult enough to move entire projects over with single system worflows. Double system brings on a whole other world of headaches that may end up not working anyway.

Did these shots have common timecode? Since that may need to be redone in MC. You could try assembling all your shots into a timeline and exporting as AAF then importing that into MC and see what you get. Report back and we’ll move to next step.

Ah yes. Consistency is key to keep things the same with no surprises.

It’s not a glitch – NTSC is a 30 frame counting system, so 24 frame native essence will still have as though it’s counting in a 30 frame world, thus the dropping of frames. But all that is keyed off the cadence relationship A, B, C, and D (and a hidden X). If you want to see 24 straight up, then duplicate the START into the TC24 and that will count as :00 to :23.

In an HD project, 24fps is a SMPTE standard, and will count as such in the START column. The START column always counts as the project type.

Not really, no swap function other than a manual overwrite edit. In order to do a relink, there has to be some source column that is the same and can be any column and a common timecode, and can be any (or most) of the timecode columns. When you look at the old and new clip in the bin under the Tape or Source File columns what is displayed?

Assuming the “Tape” and REEL are the same in the process, you can do a “relink to selected”when both sequence and clip(s) are highlighted. Sequence will update with the new clip now referenced.

  • Are you sure the file itself is not corrupt? Does it play all the way through in MoviePlayer?

  • Nothing new in this area, with NAB around the corner we can only wait and see if there are any surprises.

Agreed, mixdown first uses all cores, then export QT reference from there and use a third party application to encode. It is unfortunate that MC7 offers the ability to transcode to 800kbs H.264 but will not allow export “same as source” for those clips. It would make these types of workflows much faster and easier to manage.
