I would think that FCP doesn’t do a very good job at converting HD to SD. Use Compressor for the best results (or After Effects).

For multiple BD-R duplication, we use “The Cube” — an automated solution (although it doesn’t do the printing). It works well and can handle 25 discs at a time — great to run overnight.

On the cheap side, I’ve had great success with Optimum Quantum BD-R discs (under $2 ea). The thermal discs work well with a Teac P-55C printer.

I’ve had excellent results down-converting HD material to SD using After Effects. I then take the resulting ProRes file and create my MPEG-2 files for the DVD (using Compressor).

  • I would convert everything to the same format and size. I had to create a h.264 clip at 1080p and had a dozen different image sizes and codecs. I just converted everything to the same and it made editing easy.

If they need PAL — then convert everything to PAL first. If they need NTSC — then go that route. It will make your life easier.

Ok – well I figured out the problem. It had nothing to do with cropping in Compressor. I had a wrong setting in Episode Pro (used to create the MXF file).

It was approved by the network. Thanks to all!

What did you import from? Possibly a DVD?

Well – looks like I got my files approved and I didn’t have to use SDI capture. I just had a wrong setting in Episode Pro.

    This workflow does work 🙂

Well – everything seems to work well but the test clips were rejected as they indicated it was riddled with RFD.

I’m starting to think that Compressor is not detecting the cadence correctly. Either that or Episode Pro is messing up my TFF somehow.

Would it matter if the Digibeta was captured via component vs. SDI? I used component.

  • Hi – should the view setting be 576p (in FCP) for the external monitor? Also, should I scrub through the timeline and show both fields, field-1 or field-2? Playback always looks smooth.

The resulting video says that it is TFF (and that is what I selected when rendering the final video in Compressor), which is what the network requires — but it sounds like even though you may have this set, internally, your fields can still be a mess?
