No, Final Cut doesn’t encode HDV without conforming it using software. You need (hardware) either a capture card or Matrox MXO to interface with live video from FC.

This feature is not available on the EX series camera, however if you need a redundant recording choice then look into the Convergent Design Nano Flash HD-SDI/HDMI portable recorder. You can record with the SXS cards and to the Nano at the same time.

Content is still KING. IMO If you have great content you don’t need to worry about the ratings.
The EX camera has an amazing HD image quality due to the 1/2 full raster HD sensors.
If you are looking for better quality you don’t need a more expensive camera you just need the ability to record beyond the bit rate limits of the camera.
Convergent Design has developed the Flash XDR Compact Flash HD-SDI field recorder that gives you control of the same Sony Mpeg-2 encoder (inside the EX cameras) that allow you to choose bit rates you need that are near uncompressed quality.
The Convergent Design Nano Flash is a much smaller HD-SDI/HDMI recorder that is the perfect mate to the EX cameras and it will also save you time as you can wrap these files as either MXF or .MOV that makes them ready to edit for most NLE’s. This is a great time saving feature.
I’m sure if the EX series recorded @ 50Mbps 4:2:2 then it would get the Gold rating.

You can call it what you like, I wouldn’t consider the EX3 as anything other than a professional broadcast HD camera. Who is calling it prosumer?

I really think it would be a huge benefit for you and this club to consult (hire) a professional DP, LD or Gaffer who has years of experience with lighting and shooting video. You will find answers to general questions here but not everyone will be able to give you all the details necessary to really save you money.

You are correct that it doesn’t have this feature yet but I just spoke with Mike Schell and he is committed to providing over/under crank (interval frame recording) features.

I would hope there would be a solution that doesn’t add another render to the process in post.Each camera manufacture has different metadata to work with and CD is working on a solution that will work with each manufacturer or they will create their own internal setting for both Flash XDR and the Nano Flash recorders.
I’m confident you will see this feature and possibly with the first shipment of Nano Flash recorders in June.

I don’t think the camera outputs 60 fps with a 24 timebase as this a a function of how the clip is flagged to indicate the timebase and I don’t know if the XDR gets the same signal/flags. I will inquire with Convergent Design. The SDI output will most likely send out 60 fps and you may need to figure out how to best use it on your 24p timeline to slow it down. My XDR is out this week so I can’t really test this situation.
