Do a search for “print+templates” in Google and you’ll find a plethora of printers who offer them free of charge.

January 16, 2006 at 8:27 pm in reply to: AE must have played a part in this cool motorola ad ?It could have been done in almost any compositor, but much of it was done in an inferno. AE is more than capable of doing this entire piece but not with the timeline that it was turned around unfortunately.

January 10, 2006 at 1:18 am in reply to: Is there any way to build a perfect circle in AI 9 that doesn’t wobble when I try spinning it in AE 6.5?Actually, it is more than likely an aspect ratio problem. If you create a circle in AI and your video comp is 720 x 480 (or any other non-square aspect ration) upon import the graphic will conforn to the aspect of your comp. Make sure that you’re not just witnessing a desktop phenomenon by checkin it on your external monitor.

January 5, 2006 at 7:58 am in reply to: “Must Have” OSX applications for print layout and graphic design work?InDesign is where I was leaning from the get go, and considering that it camee with two of the creative suites that we bought last year…duh! I don’t have the option to buy further licenses at present due to numerous HEAVY investments, but the truth is that I need to find a reliable resource to get the job done, on time, on budget and with as little mental overhead as possible. The Adobe interface is mindbogglingly deep, but the familiarity might be what I need to get organized.
And as a pat on the back, another COW told me the After Effects solution might be just the ticket for me. I never thought of it, but it supports near infinite resolution, provides functional layers and has a HUGE assortment of tools in the form of plug-ins and scripting resources to make it a viable option too. I use a pair of L-Systems Trio monitors and they offer just nough real estate to make the AE print option a reality. Are there any examples of print done with AS online for reference? Do you have anything comparative that I could view before investing the month of “how to” in AE as a option?
Tony, thanks man!

January 5, 2006 at 7:51 am in reply to: “Must Have” OSX applications for print layout and graphic design work?Yeah, but I didn’t want to overshoot my abilities. If you knew me, you’d worry about the tools that will be subject to my “wrath”. I’ve got a pretty good reputation with software people, but I am very hard on hardware and just wanted to be sure of anything outside of the realm of “mega computer software heaven” stores.
And while I was actually looking for alternatives, your appraisal is well received as most of my research kind of says the same thing. But Quark DOES look and feel so old on the front end. I have heard a lot about overhauls and shake-ups from them, but the price, lack of tangible experience with it in a real-world production environment and the fact that it’s been sliding on the computer-to-plate printing front leads me to ask of the alternative options. Thanks for the input.

HA, HA, HA!!!!
That’s the best idea I’ve ever heard. The next person that calls me asking about a “rough estimate” for a 30 minute program, I’ll tell them that we charge by the foot. I can hear the eyebrows scrunching right now.

The answer to this question depends greatly on the issuing body of the certificate and the specifics of the studies undertaken as a part of that course. If your certificate is from Steve’s Skool of Photoshop, then value the certificate accordingly. If the course that you take is recognized and acknowledged by Adobe as a part of their training regiment, then the certificate holds significantly more value.
As a point of consideration, I’ve met and hired people with and without Adobe Photoshop certification, and there are instances when the certificate is the only positive to these people’s work. So I think that it’s fair to say that the certification does hold some merit in the eyes of employers. However, all the certification in the world will not make you actually perform if you don’t have the internal tools necessary to use Photoshop efficiently and effectively.
As a quick assessment of my employment records for the year passing, I have hired 4 people who had certification and 6 who have not. Only one of them has performed at the level that I expect and maintained a working relationship with us, and he does not have a certificate of any kind

December 23, 2005 at 6:50 pm in reply to: “Must Have” OSX applications for print layout and graphic design work?Listen fella’s, I realize that the holidays have got us all wrapped up in work, play and food…but is there anyone with some useful input on this front or is the issue devoid of a solution? I’m needing to make a move before January 1st and the road is narrowing.
Thanks,

December 21, 2005 at 5:59 am in reply to: is flolight a $ alternative to kinoflo?Well deserved, I assure you.
I’ll try to shoot you a private email soon. The holidays are obviously a pretty bumpy time to spend more than a few minutes sitting still, what with Grandma running for the bathroom and my daughters death defying “tree art” which threatens to burn the house down…not to mention the fact that I have clients barking orders left and right as well.
Yours,
