February 16, 2006 at 6:00 pm in reply to: inserting road signs into driving footageHow hard is the video industry in Ausie-ville to get involved in? I’ve owned my own place for almost 8 years now and have simply tired of the race here. I’ve got a few interested buyers, and frankly, I prefer the view over there.
I’ve got two short stints in NZ coming up for separate productions, but I’ve thought about just pitching camp there for a while. The trouble is that I’ve got to be “working” before I leave the ground here in the US. Are there placement firms that find employment for a fee, or is here an office dedicated to job placements in Austrailia?

Nah, Apple more than likely didn’t develop it as you see it, but I liken Apple’s ability to dream up crazy and cool ideas to those of Leonardo da Vinci. The funding for such a “toy” would be Apple’s tell-tale signature…which I’d bet is more closely related to the truth that what any of us may have heard.

[Chris Figat] “apple has nothing to do with it (other than the fact that they apparently own the patent to the concept”
Um, that IS the point. Apple doesn’t only own the patent, they regularly fund and/or purchase these innovative techno-experiments in order to capitalize on their real-world use. With the fact that Apple has been innovating computers since their creation, I’d be surprised if they don’t find some means of integrating this into home-based computer control systems or the UltiMac system, basically a computer that can run your home electronics and so on.
I knew that after seeing Minority Report (and Red Planet before) that it wouldn’t be long before someone tried to make that touch-tech a reality. Can’t wait to make coffee from the shower or wash my car from the comfort of my “big chair”.

I was told that it didn’t work with some of them. Anything that keeps me from reinstalling them again.

February 13, 2006 at 4:24 am in reply to: Cheap After Effects Software, is this legal? As you may, or may not know, OEM software is legitimate software modified to be sold, most often WITH a relevant hardware package. Sometimes the documentation stripped, sometimes it is the outer box, but if it does not come with the other elements that it was designed to by the manufacturer of the software, its illegal. There are exceptions to this general truth in rare cases, such as downloadable intallers and so on, but for the general term OEM, its a strech to find anything redeeming in their offer.

Podcasting is unfortunately a line of distribution that offers little in the way of profit unless you’ve the means to have your message sponsored or subleased by someone who would benefit from the exposure to your audience. If you’ve got the means to do so, find a sponsor ASAP an make your podcast as interesting and entertaining as you possibly can so as to build interest.
I only began doing podcasts in 2004 and at that time, the novelty alone was dragging sponsors to the new blog. Times are changing again, but the need to create something of value will always prove to be profitable over time to those who are both tech savvy and financially aware of their needs.
Good luck!

[blacky] “also the drives are fast enough”
“Fast” is all relative to the application and project settings that you use. I can capture 10 bit uncompressed to my 320UW SCSI raid and still hav DV clips drop frames with no apparent reason. If the bus is bogged down or you are having an issue which is throughput related, you’re going to need to change your settings to find the error on your end. The truth is that there COULD be thousands of probable errors, but yours is almost certainly related to the PCI bus.
[blacky] “it works 100000% under pinnacle”
Well, that being the case, it sounds like you’ve solved your own problem…so I applaud your efforts. If one software package doesn’t work for you and you’re not interested in finding the proper settings for your machine (assuming that they exist), your options always provide the possibility of another piece of software that requires less technical savvy solving the enigma.
I’m sorry we couldn’t help more.

Shut off your desktop playback and monitoring and play your video back to an external monitor only. You’re overloading your PCI bus and causing a data bottleneck. If you can’t capture without dropped frames, that might be due to the fragmentation level of your capture drive, a bad FireWire port or loose connections, slow proc or a number of other data-related proccesses that can, and will slow a great capture. Obviously, you shouldn’t try to capture to an external drive and should try to capture video to drives exclusively for that purpose. My gut screams throughput trouble however.

[Mark Weaver] “Just curious if this codec really better than the
Microsoft DV codec?”
Absolutely! While I hesitate to say that it’s the de facto DV codec, it’s hard to prove that it’s not with the difference in image quality. Some have said that the MC codec offered only a slightly noticeable difference. In my opinion, even the smallest boost in quality is worth the investment
