How weird. My experience was a simple read error (though the file transferred when the download ended, and auto-ejected the card, was just a QT logo- nothing played). Hopefully you quarantined the card and still have the files on it. If so I would run the PhotoRec software on it (prev. post) to see if it can rebuild something readable. It took about six hours to retrieve 14.7G, but worked so well for me, I donated for it (and I am POOR). Good luck…ML

Just saw this today; but two questions: could you see any content of the clip either on the 7D or on a card reader to the Mac? If so it’s likely recoverable. You say you downloaded the footage (FCP L&T?, DCIM/Misc to hard drive?), so it saved correctly. Can you get info and see the size/data of the file? I’m guessing you’re on QT10, any other players available to try (QT7,VLC)? My problem was an SDHC (also Sandisk 16G 30Mbs) card I could see, but not save. The review is mine too. Found it on the Cow. Not much cheap Raid 1 out there: and if this is your “starter” external and your original and working media are all on it, I feel better knowing it’s on both drives. Good luck editing…ML

I can’t find my original Canon OEM cable (for use with a computer), but looking at my 550D in the “AV out” port (@6x magnification), I only count 5 pins in the camera connection. There are proprietary USB 2.0 supporting connections, but I’ve just grabbed whatever USB cable is handy (from my card reader, ext. hard drive, etc.), and it’s always worked. Can’t find anything 6pin on Google but firewire, but I’m not a hardware expert. Ordered the Motorola Razor adapter to try (<5$). Will test and reply. Hope we find our solutions…ML

Just shot all weekend with my cheap Lilliput 7″ monitor, and the ML menu was visible on it the whole time. Odd though: With camera on(live-view/movie mode), connecting an HDMI cable kills the LCD screen; but when I turn on the power to the monitor, it comes back. Turning on the monitor, of course, kills the LCD again; but since I can see the ML menu on either, I at least don’t have to toggle between them (as I imagined). Hope Tramm and company can expand this menu to other cameras, it’s a huge leap for the lowly T2i…ML

No specs given, but high probability it’s the standard smaller end of a common USB cable (OEM Canon cable works on my portable hard drive). That loss of LCD only happens on my camera when I plug the big end into my computer(launching EOS utility), not when I fit the cable to camera, so maybe with a passive device (like the adapter/headphones) it won’t happen. Not a very useful trade at that point, as many ML features don’t appear in external monitors. Anyone else test this audio jack while recording?

At the price though, I’m going to try it since I have the same camera and ML loaded (bless Saint Tramm). Luck to us both…ML

The Boris text generator has decent gradient options, and it’s built into Final Cut, if your wanting to stay within the program. I’m still learning Motion and agree it’s the most powerful choice, but if your not looking at lots of animated text (or difficult fonts), the Boris options should help. Good luck…ML

Phil is dead-on about Sigma lens for video. And they make lenses Canon doesn’t (30mm f1.4, 20mm f1.8). As I own both these lenses, I love the images and huge DOF options, but a word on focusing. I would always look for Sigma lenses with a button for AF/MF, as the 20mm has a focus ring that clicks forward and back, and this design introduces play when focusing in the manual mode. The 30mm has no such play, and a much kinder “throw” (more overall movement, like a cine-lens) when racking. I love the view angle and speed of the 20mm, but it’s really hard to follow a moving subject-even more than normal with a DSLR. Still my favorite brand of starter lenses though; plan on the 17-50mm f2.8 next…ML
