Posted by Zack Mulvaney on April 8, 2011 at 8:42 amAny recommendations? I’ve been coming across a lot of conflicting info. Good and bad stuff about WD. Good and bad stuff about Lacie. Etc…

April 8, 2011 at 1:01 pmEvery drive has good and bad stories.
Thats why you need good backup plan.
Important Data on 1 drive. Never smart.
Personally i have great experience with g-technology.
G drive q is great. All hitachi. Good warranty. Garanteed playback for certain Video formats/codecs. -

April 8, 2011 at 1:01 pmHi, i recently got a wd 1tb and once i created a Mac os patition without non bootable part for any system (osx ir Windows ) ir Works fine, fast and quiet! For 100 bucks is good for me. Not complain about lacie, its also good.
For both of them, you should remenber not to fill it over the 80% and tht’s all.
Hope this Will help. -

April 8, 2011 at 2:01 pmWD Drives and Lacie drives have been good to me. Like Paul said, whatever you go with be sure to have a back up of your assets. All drives will fail on you eventually.

April 8, 2011 at 5:13 pmHey Zack,
This is what I’m using.
The review is mine too. Found it on the Cow. Not much cheap Raid 1 out there: and if this is your “starter” external and your original and working media are all on it, I feel better knowing it’s on both drives. Good luck editing…ML

April 9, 2011 at 6:04 pmThe CalDigit VR and VR mini will offer you great results. I’ve never had a problem with my 2TB VR, which I keep in RAID 1. Price isn’t too bad anymore either at $400 from the CalDigit online store. Could check the B&H prices too. This also offers you FW800/400, USB 2.0 and eSATA. I also like the aluminum enclosed drives like CalDigit and G-Technology. LaCie drives do also have aluminum enclosures but in my experience, the ports on LaCie drives are notorious for burning out and their really isn’t any way of telling when it will happen. Sometimes it may be within months to a year, or sometimes never, but I don’t like taking risks on investments like that. Also the VR/VR mini has hot-swappable drives so when you fill up you don’t need a brand new system, just new drives saving you some coin in the long run.

April 9, 2011 at 6:13 pmquick addition…
The reason I like the aluminum enclosed drives over plastic enclosures (WD MyBooks/Passports and Seagate externals) is that the aluminum acts as a heat-sink around the entire drive helping to keep the drive cool and overall prolonging the life of the drive and the circuitry within. If you’re looking for a media drive, CalDigit and G-Tech won’t let you down.
