Another alternative to renting a deck is to work with a “service bureau” type facility, just for the laying off of projects to tape.

There are numerous companies that offer a similar range of services, including mine, so I encourage you to shop around for pricing and service options.

In our case, we have all the decks and you provide a self contained high resolution Quicktime of the project (From Final Cut, Avid, Adobe, whatever) and we master it to tape for you. Also in our case we do them for just slightly more than the cost of a straight dub to that format and it is not unusual for clients from all over the country to mail us a small hard drive if they aren’t near us. In some cases the files are instead uploaded to our FTP but the files can get pretty big, so FTP is usually only used for a spot or perhaps something as long as a music video. Any bigger/longer than that and FTP probably isn’t a reasonable way to go. In most cases a service like this is cheaper or is comparable to renting a deck without all the hassle.

September 1, 2008 at 5:21 am in reply to: Dead line in PVM-20L5

To add to the above information, I now see a companion “dead line” also on the bottom third of screen. To my eye it looks spaced just as far from the bottom as the first one I noticed is from the top of the screen. Now the pair oddly seem like they serve a purpose (though I have no idea what). The lines are only seen with HD feeds, not SD.

    Thoughts?

October 21, 2007 at 6:40 am in reply to: Sony DVW-500 punch-in errors

    We had a similar problem.
I’d be in the studio laying back, I’d punch in, all the bells an whistles would indicate that we were punched in, and yet I’d still hear the scratch or temp track playing back out of the deck. Come to find out (after some tail chasing), the front panel of our deck had some kind of a problem and it was switching itself to pre-read and not displaying it as such. We had the front panel $$$ replaced and that took care of that gremlin.

Perhaps not the same for you. But maybe?

August 23, 2005 at 5:35 am in reply to: SDI in Sony PVM-1345Q?

on a simalr note I have purchased on ebay a used bkm-101c for use in a pvm-1954q. Could also use some help on installation. The physical installation seems straight forward, but The card seems to require at least one cable for connection, and it did not come with one. Even if it did, it is not clear to me where exactly it would plug into. Any leads on on-line instructions of anyone who could walk me thru — via an e-mail or phone call?
