  • Walter,
After looking at them side by side, I have come to the conclusion that I want more than the technology allows 😉 Something like great looking full screen HD quality in a handy 1 MB file.

The H.264 looks good, so I think I’ll shoot for that even with the larger file sizes. Thanks for replying!

  • Hi Walter,
I wish I was compressing HD for the web 😉 or doing anything else with HD for that matter!

It’s 1:44 in length. I originated it in DV. The best clip I’ve gotten so far is using H.264 280×217, 8 bit mono 32khz audio at 762 Kbps and the clip is 9.5 MB. I’m still experimenting, but I’ve done quite a bit already. I’d like it to be a little bigger than 280×217, but I don’t really want to go too big on the download size.

The only reason I’m asking as I say is because I used to make wmv files that were 320×240 and about 3 MB for the same duration…

  • I am using FCP 4.5 with compressor, QT pro version 7.0.3.

  • David,
Thank you for your answer. I didn’t export with titles, but the nests do have color correction and variable speed effects. Would that cause a problem?

  • Hello again. I managed to get a person in another department, told him the probblem I was having and pursuaded him to transfer me directly to a person. Hopefully all is well now. I’ll know for sure after it arrives.

Thanks a million, Jerry! I must have read the instructions in the manual 10 times but didn’t realize that the copy was to create a project with ONLY the unused clips in it. I compared files and it worked great. Thanks a lot!

  • Mark,
Can you recommend any Business and Marketing books that you feel are particilarly useful? I’m very interested in expanding in this area, having learned in the last few years just how critical it is.
    Thanks in advance!

July 28, 2005 at 3:33 am in reply to: What is fair replacement for broken camera?

Thank you all for your great answers! Even though I knew that the situation was not right, it was reassuring to get your input as part of my consideration. As it stands, I showed them the current listing of the same camera used and politely said that I did not think it was reasonable to pay more than this. My supervisor was disappointed but seemed reluctantly agreeable. Still, it has to go the financial guy for approval. In any case, the used price will be my max, just to try to be reasonable.

For those of you who commented about looking for another job, I posted a question about a job search a few posts back! 😉 That was before I broke the camera, but I have unfortunately had many other experiences with this employer that scream this isn’t the best employer. I seem to be fishing in the wrong pond when I look for jobs, but this time I’m determined to be smarter about it.

Bob, I had to laugh when you said, “Maybe your “trip” was the first step to another and better job….” It would have been easier if I took the step intentionally, but I agree wholeheartedly!

Since I posted my original post, we were able to remove the lens. (Previously, we could not get it off.) The lens works fine. It was actually the mount on the camera body that was bent. When I looked into the camera where the lens attaches, I could not see the CCDs and part of the interior mechanism was definitely out of place. I am reasonably satisfied that the damage will be too expensive to send to the manufacturer, but I know some good engineers who would be able to assess it more particularly for me.

Thanks again for all your comments! I very much appreciate them!

July 22, 2005 at 2:35 am in reply to: What job am I applying for?

Hmmm… I think I might just go with “a production position” then. I have done that in the past but was concerned about looking indecisive. (It was tempting to apply for the VP of BA fun, though!) Bob, even though I can do a lot of things, I wouldn’t mind wearing fewer hats for a company that has more staff (and specialization). The one exception is that I worked 100% post for one place and I’m just not enough of a mole to stay in the dark all the time 😉
I did change my resume quite a while back to include, but not emphasize the employer as much as the type and quality of work.
One of the things I am trying to avoid is jobs that don’t pay well. Unfortunately, I have worked for several government and non-profit organizations and I have learned that “non-profit” means the employees should expect that, too! I’m going to fish in a bigger pond.
Thanks for what you said, guys. I needed an outside-my-brain view. 🙂

    Thanks, Jeff! I appreciate it.

Bryce, I had the same problem. I thought it was a simple question but couldn’t read the old posts…
    Thanks again!
