    Excellent to hear!

Would you mind posting the link to the solution here so others may benefit?

    Thanks!

  • Why not have multiple volumes on the Facilis? Is it because you just want one big ‘bit bucket’ to use?

Facilis can scale MUCH large than 8TB, you just need to create multiple volumes.

Cinedeck will record into DNxHD AND in an MXF wrapper.

Telestream’s Pipeline is an excellent choice, as noted in a previous post.

Is there any time to take the digital file (like ProRes) and encode it into DNxHD before being used?

Are you avoiding ProRes (or AMA in general) because of performance or…?

Convergent Design’s Nanoflash will do XDCAM, which Avid can play via AMA. I know you are looking for Avid native, but Avid plays with XDCAM via AMA better than ProRes. It may be a good hybrid for you.

I’d uninstall ALL old versions of MC and supporting software. EVERYTHING. There should be an Avid uninstallers folder (Mac), which contains uninstallers for all of the apps. If on a PC, make sure you uninstall ALL mentioned of Avid from the Control Panel. Then reboot, prior to installing the version you want to use. Once installed, reboot once more.

If you bought support from Avid, you get free updates for the length of the support contract. If a student, you get 4 years free updates. Contrast to FCS, where you need to buy the next rev bump up, and there exists no free upgrade contract. I believe Adobe is similar as well.

Ain’t no free lunch – the people who make the software you use to make money need to survive as well, IMHO.

  • Definitely, AMA is a relatively new feature to the Avid product line (only about a year or so now) and because it’s an open architecture, there are some hiccups. Quicktime is a VERY OLD technology, and there are hundreds of codecs and formats. Avid, via AMA, is now open to this, and attempting to deal with this task can sometimes yield problems.

Usually, AMA works great, but there are occasional problems….hence Creative Cow 🙂

  • We have a Blackmagic Video Hub in the mix and 5 machines using the devices, and it works 100%.

Mac CPU (Nehalem/Westmere) DVI Out——DVI Extender—–(SDI) Blackmagic Video Hub—–projectors, video monitors, VTRs, etc.

As long as your display mode is set to the 1080i preset, you’re golden.

When the converter is connected and if you are set to SDI Video mode (not DVI Extender Mode) in the Converter Utility, you will have a monitor icon next to a 1080 and 720 resolution – no frame rates listed. Select those, and your output should be a compliant SDI video signal.

Need a screen grab or video to see? 🙂

  • When you change resolutions in System Prefs (Display), do you have a 1080i (Television) option, with a picture of a monitor next to it? That’s what we have to select when we want SDI VIDEO, not a simple DVI extension.

Keep in mind 59.94 could in actuality be 29.97. 59.94 are fields, 29.97 is frames. However, again, since you’re using the DVI Extender to create a video signal, you should have the option (listed above) to select a television preset – without messing with the frame / field rates.

EDIT As I suggested, did you try eliminating the router, and trying to go to an SDI monitor to eliminate variables? IS the USB plugged in? When you launch the BM Converter utility, does it “see” the unit?

IMHO, Compared to a full featured integrated (with the NLE) capture application, yeah, it’s kinda basic.

For me, the biggest is limited metadata support for use within the NLE…that feature alone is worth it’s weight in gold when capturing from baseband.

  • We have a similar setup, only using a BM Video Hub, and a much wider range of Nehalem and Westmere Macs, all with different gfx cards….but we’ve had our fair share of DVI Extender oddness.

Dumb questions, but A) is the USB cable to the DVI Extender plugged in and B) do you have the converter utility installed and set correctly?

    https://blackmagic-design.com/support/detail/?sid=3950&pid=4018&os=mac&leg=0

Often, after making changes we had to reboot.

I suggest plugging in a DVI extender, configuring it, and running it to an SDI monitor to eliminate a possible variable, and when it finally shows on the SDI monitor, THEN patch it back into your router.

What concerns me is that you’re converting the signal to SDI to VIEW SDI, correct…NOT to extended the DVI to SDI, then change it BACK to DVI, correct? When you;re in an SDI video mode you should be selecting a video res of 1080i, and it should have an icon of a monitor next to it…no need for ResX.
