Can anyone offer possible solutions for recording file-based, avid friendly HD? I am looking at mxfSpeedrail for the first time. I wish there was something like Ki Pro for Avid on PC – no Apple ProRes 422. P2 recorders use P2 cards rather than straight to drive storage, correct? Our workflow is based on P2 cameras 720p/30 DVCProHD. We prefer progressive and for our purposes 30fps simply for storage space issues.

The recorder request is for our studio work using BroadcastPix switcher. We can capture HD-SDI live to the Avid but would rather record to files, creating our archive first before editing. The switcher outputs 1080i 59.94 or 720p/60 so ideally the recorder could downconvert 60fps to 30fps in recording but we could live with 60fps – that’s what we have been capturing … our Trranex Mini only converts formats not frame rates.

    Thanks for any advice.

I tried to gather some info on these products on the Avid forums. Maybe there’s some info you can use:

If you’re looking into capturing DNxHD, the Sound Devices PIX240 could prove to be handy.

For studio applications Telestream’s Pipeline might fit the bill.

Cinedeck will record into DNxHD AND in an MXF wrapper.

Telestream’s Pipeline is an excellent choice, as noted in a previous post.

Is there any time to take the digital file (like ProRes) and encode it into DNxHD before being used?

Are you avoiding ProRes (or AMA in general) because of performance or…?

Convergent Design’s Nanoflash will do XDCAM, which Avid can play via AMA. I know you are looking for Avid native, but Avid plays with XDCAM via AMA better than ProRes. It may be a good hybrid for you.

Thanks to all for the info. I will be looking at them all. Honestly I am probably shying away from ProRes and/or AMA from ignorance more than anything (old dog new tricks syndrome). I have not found AMA to be “worth the hassle” – linking to files with troublesome codecs, rendering/transcoding, but I have limited experience and equipment. We are still on XP, MC 5.0x but I want to upgrade to Win7 on a hexcore box … when we can afford it and hopefully Avid MC 5.5 has improved the AMA workflow (performance mostly). We want to go tapeless rather than invest in HD tape & equipment. We have 11 Avid dongles, 7 have been upgraded to MC 5. Maybe going with all MACs would help – back in the day when Avid used “AVR” resolutions, we were MAC and they were the most stable systems we ever had. You think I need a consultant?! lol

After a lot of web searching, I chose the Sound Devices PIX 240 because it records DNxHD to SSD’s. Two other devices are available that do much the same including Cinedeck and Cine Martin. Cinedeck probably represents the holy grail for recording. Weighing in at around $10,000 this tool covers all bases from un-compressed on down.

Cine Martin remains quite mysterious and isn’t shipping until end of Summer. A Barcelona company, they could certainly use the services of a quality English writer as well as more than their very scant information about the device.

While the Pix 240 is also unavailable at this time (the second week of June), I have quite a lot of confidence in their offering because they are a terrific audio equipment manufacturer and my interaction with Sound Devices has been excellent thus far. Of these three options, only Cinedeck is bullet-proof at this time. It was simply more tool than I required for my field production work flow.

I made my Pix 240 purchase in May and was told delivery would be mid-June. In July I was informed delivery would be the first week of August. Today’s news is the Pix 240 will deliver in mid-September. I’m dazed and confused!

    Dear Mom,

Moments ago I got a delivery notice email from B and H. My Sound Devices Pix 240 is in the mail! I placed the order June 9th. I believe a game-changer is on the way. Well, my game anyway. This is all very exciting, especially with the recent arrival of an LTO archive solution.
