Media Composer won’t open
Posted by Barry Mcqueen on May 26, 2011 at 1:45 pmI downloaded from Avid what I thought was an update for my Media Composer 5.03.
When I installed it I found out that rather than a free update to fix the many problems it was an entirely new version for which they wanted another £500.
I removed the installation and re-installed my original version.
Since then I have been unable to open the programme.I get the following message:-
AvidMediaComposer.exe – Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ?CompareAndExchange@sys_AtomicIntPtr@@QAE_NHH@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library CoreUtls.dll.Anyone got any ideas?
Suppose I should have known better that think Avid were giving a free update.

May 26, 2011 at 2:31 pmI’d uninstall ALL old versions of MC and supporting software. EVERYTHING. There should be an Avid uninstallers folder (Mac), which contains uninstallers for all of the apps. If on a PC, make sure you uninstall ALL mentioned of Avid from the Control Panel. Then reboot, prior to installing the version you want to use. Once installed, reboot once more.
If you bought support from Avid, you get free updates for the length of the support contract. If a student, you get 4 years free updates. Contrast to FCS, where you need to buy the next rev bump up, and there exists no free upgrade contract. I believe Adobe is similar as well.
Ain’t no free lunch – the people who make the software you use to make money need to survive as well, IMHO.

May 26, 2011 at 9:26 pmI am on a PC. The machine is not connected to the internet and the only alteration I made was to load Media Composer 5.5. I have since removed it and all Avid programmes. I have swithched the machine off overnight re-loaded Media Composer 5.03 and can’t get it to open.
I have MC5.03 also on a slower machine. Too slow to use really and I have tried copyimg from the other macine and overwriting on the proper machine the CorUtils.dll (3 of). Still to no avail.I understand that Avid have o eat but if you had experienced their performance when dealing with PAL SD Footage in Xpress DV you may wish that they starve.
Thanks anyway I’ll keep trying.

May 27, 2011 at 2:45 amReally re-read what Michael Kammes said.
Run the Avid uninstaller. For everything. Make sure there’s no trace of their software. Then try reinstalling 5.0.3

May 30, 2011 at 12:56 pmA lovely German lady, Kristina, supplied the solution on Avid’s own forum.
I had to go into the registry and make a few alterations.
Thanks all.

Hi,
did you install the core service from here?
C:Program FilesCommon FilesAvid
If this does not help, I would try to make a complete uninstall (think about backup) including all patches, digidesign audio drivers, sentinel protection.
AVID also suggest deleting all folders named “AVID” in c:program files and c:documents and settingsall usersdocuments
And the following regestry entries:
– HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREavid
– HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREAvid TechnologyAVX Plug-ins
reboot the system
Then try to install your 5.0.3 again, after that the patch you were running before (I´m happy with 5.0.3.7r).
Good luck!
Kristina
