Not much difference outside in good light but a big difference in low light situations. The NX70 does not come close to the NX5.

I’m on Adobe as well. First thing I did when I got the NX5 was shoot a few quick clips with an audio check and load them in my NLE to make sure everything worked. First test, I had the same white noise. The NX5 is set to record LPCM audio right out of the box. I switched the setting to Dolby digital AC3 and now have no problems. Have never been able to get my system to accept the LPCM audio.

I have the NX5U and it’s an amazing camera but AVCHD can be difficult to work with in NLE’s and you better have one he’ll of a good processor to edit with this format. Main reason I bought this camera was SDI out. If you don’t need SDI, I’d suggest going with the Z5U and buying the optional flash card record unit. Same price as buying the NX5U with the optional flash unit and HDV .m2t files are easier to use than AVCHD .MTS files. As far as image quality, Z5 and NX5 are identical but much better than the Panasonic HMC150.

  • First, if you light it properly and shoot at -3db or -6db gain, the picture looks phenomenal on a 50″ HDTV. However, I recently rented a Nano Flash for a day to test this very setup. I was astonished. First, attaching a monitor via SDI to view a live HD image was amazing. Second, I shot some video on the Nano then checked it out. In bright lighting I didn’t see much of a difference. However, medium to low light was a different story. The Nano shots looked much much better.

I dual record to SD cards and the Flash unit. Give the cards to the client them head home with a copy on the flash unit. Once back, I copy EVERYTHING from the Flash unit onto 1TB Western Digital Passport Essential hard drives. when a drive fills up, I buy a new one and start filling it. I also have a 1TB drive explicitly for STOCK FOOTAGE.

How important is SDI out to you? That was the main reason I bought the NX5U over the Z5U. I would rather have had the Z5 for many reasons (shoot tape & solid state, DV/DVCAM instead of MPEG2, .m2t files are easier on the CPU than AVCHD etc) but I needed SDI out to be able to connect to a live/sat truck to do live shots. It’s the only advantage the NX5 has over the Z5.

I personally think the portable flash drive is a must. I dual record EVERYTHING. Drives and cards do, and will, fail eventually so having the option to create an instant backup for insurance was a big reason why I bought this camera. Be aware that operating the camera this way cuts the battery life by about 30%. I have two Sony NPF970’s and the 570 that came with the camera and will use all of them on a 10 hour shoot.

You’ll want to shoot 1080-24p with the NXCAM. In this situation, matching the frame rate is more important than matching the resolution.

This is a FCP issue with conversion. Use a software conversion. Program like Sorensen Squeeze or streamclip to convert before importing to FCP and you’ll have no issues. AVCHD does not convert well to ProRes.
