  • The problem isn’t the camera, it’s that the card/flash unit are FAT32 instead of NTSF format. With FAT32, you can’t capture anything over 2GB. As mentioned above, using the included content management software to load clips eliminates these issues. For the record, I’ve had the same type of problems using P2 & AVID. Issue was never fixed. Long clips get split in the camera and would not load correctly. Bigger problem when i let a clip span two cards. Panasonic had no answers and AVID had no answers. Eventually we had to attach a deck via SDI for long continuous records or stop and start the camera every 15 minutes. This was with a HPX2000 editing on AVID Newscutter. Most cameras can’t record long continuous clips over 30 minutes without some type of issue.

In the user manual, it says to do a MEDIA DUMP when deleting cards, not just deleting clips or formatting cards. Intelligible media fragments will build up on the cards or flash unit and eventually cause the camera to be unable to capture to the media. You should do a MEDIA DUMP of your cards and flash unit once a week. Also, using cards that can not write at the speed needed for the setting you’re in will crash the camera. Many cards only write at 20Mbs but the camera’s FX mode records at 24Mbs. I ALWAYS use SDHC Class IU cards that write at 45Mbs. I have yet to experience a crash my taking these steps.

I’ve used the HPX170 and just bought a NX5U based solely on info and reviews. I made the right choice with the NX5U. AVCHD has caused some issues in the NLE but other than that the camera is amazing. You’ll have to tweak the settings and set up a picture profile. Right out of the box the image is flat and washed out. All of that can be corrected easily. The included shotgun mic is surprisingly great and the lens is far better than the HPX170. SDI live output is uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2 so you can easily attach a portable recorder like a Nano Flash for applications or clients where AVCHD is not acceptable. There is so much more I could list but don’t want to write that much. For me, the biggest drawback is SD recorded in MPEG2. Not good for AVID or FCP users. Would prefer QuickTime or AVI. Finally, the optional 128GB Flash Unit is a must purchase and adds so much versatility to this camera with dual record and long record times. Good luck with the purchase. I’ve been on four shoots with this camera and it’s performed every bit as good as full size cams that cost $10k more and there is NO difference in quality between this camera and the EX1, even though the EX1 has 1/2″ chips.
