Thanks for the response Rafael, I don’t “System Pref Audio” where I select mic. I’m asking if using the audio from a HDV camera audio feed via FW is possible. So far I can not get the VO tool to hear it.

    Thank you, Shane and Rafael.

Still waiting to hear about Sony Cinemon, maybe dodge the whole import to XDCAM thing. My assistant editor posted similar question on XDCAM forum and so far only Sony Rep responded. Many years in this business has taught me to Trust but Verify.

Come on FCP users, anyone try Cinemon with workflow I described earlier.

    Thank you.

To reduce storage space for ProRes I’m considering using the workflow I discussed earlier and hoping to find someone with experience using Cinemon plug in to further speed up the process.

Anyone with Cinemon plug in experience using the workflow I described earlier?

OK, I watched Shane’s tutorial and I’m hip to the ways of archiving tapeless and importing footage, nice refresher course.

What I’m concerned about is the amount of footage, 50 – 60 hours of XDCAM EX plus some HDV and lots of GoPro footage. The final timeline will have several layers, graphics to composite, dissolves, effects, color correction, etc. The good news is I do not have to output to tape although I do need to deliver Hi Res QT for broadcast, texted and textless, mixed and unmixed.

Are you recommending I edit the XDCAM without converting it to ProRes? I like that thought but everything I read recommends differently, the amount of footage, mixed formats, complex edits, etc.

I’m considering using Sony Cinemon to view and simple cuts only the XDCAM EX footage, then batch that to ProRes to add effects, dissolves, color correction, etc. So far I can’t find anyone to comment on using Cinemon with long-form workflow?

I’ll leave all the talk about the technical to the qualified engineers, I come from the producing stand point.

If budget vs quality is the issue and expectations are low you can survive without a broadcast monitor and rely on your LCD computer monitor. Although, there are situations in which you’ll regret not having a broadcast monitor.

I come from a time and place where after spending several hundreds of thousands of dollars on production and/or equipment and countless man hours to produce a quality project, it was not wise to skimp on a few thousand dollars in order to see the completion of a successful project.

I use this monitor for broadcast, web and DVD projects and find the scopes and other features very nice to have, even if the project is not broadcast. It can also be used on location as a production monitor, clients really like seeing a quality image while on location production.

Shane makes a good point about seeing or not seeing interlacing on your computer screen .

The only time I’ve had that kind of problem is when I used stills that were CYMK instead of RGB. Do you have stills in your project, if so make sure they are RGB and no more than 2500 pixles in size.

Others on this site and much more knowledgable about such things will offer sound advice.

I’m on board with redundancy and updated storage, now I need to figure out which one fits my budget.

Still no comments about my workflow, is working in HDV or XDCAM EX crazy talk?

Thank you, I’ll look into these, I’m also reading about G-Technology low cost solution as I explore raids.

Any thoughts about HDV, XDCAM EX workflows and lower storage needs compared to ProRes?

Do you have suggestions on best solution for $2500 – $3000 budget, I already have the Stardom controller card I upgraded to a few years ago. What you say makes perfect since, unfortunately I have limited budget and need to limit my equipment investments these days and I know next to nothing about raids.

The past few years I’ve edited DVD’s with 80-hours HDV footage and used ProRes workflow working from 3TB internal, old 1.25GB SataMAX and externals FW800 without incident. This year will be 3 DVD’s projects with same amount of footage for each and with 2 of the projects overlapping each other. I’ve considered working in HDV or XDCAM. My iPhone AJA storage app reports a significant storage savings working @ 1080i30 2-ch audio in HDV 100hr=1.2TB or XDCAM EX 100hr=1.7GB, 100hr ProRes = 7.5TB. Does this sound right and am I asking for trouble working in XDCAM EX or HDV?

These DVD’s do not need to be the absolute best quality as they have limited budgets, sales and are for a niche market. Of course I’d like them to be the best they can considering the age ol production budget triangle, pick 2 from 3 choices, Good, Fast, Cheap.

The first project will be shot with 3 Sony EX1, GoPro’s and 1 Sony Z1U and net around 60 hours of footage. I’m considering editing in the native XDCAM EX importing GoPro’s as XDCAM and converting Z1U depending on how much footage I end up with or decide to use.

The Second project will be a mix of EX1, Z1U, Panasonic P2 and JVC GY-HM700, don’t ask why, thats just the way it is. Not sure best approach, ProRes seems to make since here or lots of conversion to HDV?

The 3rd DVD is shot with 3 Sony V1U’s HDV and GoPro cameras and I plan to edit in HDV, this project will net around 100-hr’s of footage.

I will also be working with an assistant using his laptop so I plan to feed him footage on an external drive. Your thoughts on best affordable storage/raid solution and workflows are appreciated.

Thanks for your replies, Yes, it was a newer feature I don’t use. Control and Mouse to zoom the display, now I know a new feature.
