I had some AVCHD footage from a Panasonic AG-HMC40 – just did a standard file import into Avid, waited while it transcoded the footage to DNxHD, then cut like normal. Footage looks good, plays smooth as butter, and haven’t had any issues with it.

In addition to what Jandle wrote, MC 5 gives you real time, track based audiosuite plugins – up to 5 per track. So if you have all your VO on A1, interviewer 01 on A2, etc…, you can compress/limit/EQ all the audio at once by applying an effect to the track. Plus, you have Mono and Stereo audio tracks – very helpful to keep your timeline view manageable.
If you use Animatte a lot, it’s realtime now. That was worth the upgrade cost alone for me. Mixed framerates in the timeline, and it actually works exactly like it’s supposed to. AMA is great for previewing quicktimes/XDCam/P2 footage, then consolidate the parts you want to use to your media drive.
If you’d like the functionality that, when you move the video and the audio comes along for the ride, you can do that in 5. Smart tools let you drag and drop and trim in the timeline in a more Premiere/FCP kind of way. You may like that, but you can turn it off if you don’t.
My suggestion – download the MC5 trial and give it a test run for 30 day to see if you like the changes and if they’ll ultimately save you time and money. Your machine may not be certified, but you can still test it out to see if it’s worth spending money on the software and a new machine.

Open your console in Media Composer (Ctrl+6 on a PC, Cmd+6 on a Mac), then type ‘alldrives’ without the quotes. Avid will now recognize network drives as media drives.
Let me know if it doesn’t work.

If you can watch the files in Quicktime, Avid will see them.
The ProRes decoder is included with Quicktime 7 and higher, I believe. If you’re running an older version of Avid and can’t upgrade your Quicktime that high, download the decoder and see if it reads the files then. Here’s the Windows ProRes decoder – the Mac decoder should be on the Apple site as well (I had this one bookmarked).

I’m on a PC. I don’t have a lot of experience with Avid on Macs.
I do know that 10.6.4 isn’t supported by Avid, though, so that may be causing conflicts. Can you roll back to 10.6.3?

It’s technically not supported, but it works. I’m running MC5 with the original Mojo and just did a bunch of digital cuts to Beta yesterday without issues.

What does this even mean? Buy a MojoDX, NitrisDX, or buy Media Composer 5.0 and a Matrox MXO2Mini and you can monitor HD to a client monitor. You’ll need a BOB for Vegas too for proper monitoring, so the point is moot.

There is no crippling Media Composer – there’s just Avid wanting to sell you Avid hardware for proper monitoring. You can’t monitor out of FCP without an AJA or Blackmagic or Matrox BOB, so what’s the difference? You can’t properly monitor out of Premiere without a BOB, so again – no difference. It’s just that FCP and Adobe don’t make hardware boxes, so you have (more) 3rd party options to choose from.[Mike Dalton] “Current AVID management has made decisions which are ruining this once-great company. “
Current management has pushed Avid further in 2 years than it saw in the 5 years before it. Look at the improvements from 2.8 to 5.0, and the (limited) support of 3rd party hardware. How is that ruining the company? They’re more responsive to customers, they’ve lowered the price of software, they’re adding features at a faster pace and with better integration than pretty much any other NLE company near their price point.Avid is far from dead. It’s a big ship, but they’re making a great effort at turning it around and putting it back on course.
To the OP – download the MC5 trial when it’s released June 10th and give it a test run. It’s really the best way to decide if Avid will work for you or not.

If the project on your old Media Composer is called Project01, start a new project of the same type on your Xpress system called Project01.
Shut down Avid.
At the finder/desktop level, copy the bins from the Media Composer Project01 folder to the newly created Xpress Project01 folder.
Open Avid. Select Project01, edit.
Now if you need to move media too, there’s more steps involved. I’ll find a link that details that.

It will get a lot better with Media Composer 5 coming out in June. They’re now giving us stereo tracks, RealTime Audio Suite plugins (5 per track), solo/muting tracks has changed, showing the sample plot on only the tracks you choose…
They’re slowly improving the audio within the editor, but it would still be best to go to an outside audio system like ProTools.
