Thanks for the reply Dennis. Sounds like the audio issues have been solved (and then some). That’s huge.
Once CS6 drops I’ll start sending in more feature requests (like auto patching, retain sequence tracks when in source monitor, etc…). Congrats again on the impending release. You guys are getting a lot of positive press.

Does Premiere have Auto Patching in the timeline now? Example: If I have source V1 patched to Record V1, uncheck Record V1 and check Record V3 does V1 automatically patch to V3? If not, has anything changed in how Premiere patched video/audio tracks?
Can you use the keyboard to move selected clips to a higher or lower track?
Can you export using In/Out, rather than workbar (I saw you can hide the workbar, and that’s nice).
Can you load a sequence into your source monitor and cut it into the timeline without it nesting – I’d prefer to have access to all video/audio tracks in the loaded sequence to repatch to the timeline.
If I load a clip with 4 mono tracks in my source monitor but have all stereo tracks in my timeline, does Premiere show me that I have 4 mono tracks on the source side? Right now it doesn’t show those tracks available for patching if I don’t the proper audio tracks available for the clip.
Thanks for answering all of our questions, too. The new release looks great so far – trimming is a huge step forward. Well done there.

Yes. You can upgrade your Xpress Pro dongle to Media Composer 6 and it should allow you to run previous versions of Media Composer with that dongle. Basically, version 6 will be a high as you’ll be able to run.
Do note, though, that when you purchase the upgrade you’ll need to request a dongle blaster when you activate MC6 – do not switch to software activation. It will disable the dongle and you won’t be able to up run previous versions.
I’d also recommend that you take full advantage of the Symphony offer if funding allows. It’s Media Composer but with a richer color correction toolset. It’s not a Resolve, but depending on the work you do might be everything you need, plus it comes with Boris Continuum Complete v8, which the Media Composer 6 upgrade doesn’t come with.

Symphony works with Kona. You need the NitrisDX for Universal Mastering. If you don’t need that, use the Kona.

Probably merging the two lines. I’d guess they’ll drop Media Composer since the Symphony name carries more weight.
They posted a profit last quarter – the ship is slowly turning around (whether it’s turning fast enough is another question). FCPX is probably helping them a bunch – now they just have to worry about Adobe and CS6, maybe Autodesk depending on their announcement.
For $1,000 though, I’m pushing very very hard for us to convert at least two of our FCP seats to Symphony.

Glad to be of help. I’m most comfortable on Avid, worked on FCP for a while, and am now working my way though Premiere. I just discovered the Increase/Decrease Tracks about two days ago. It’s a deeper program that I initially thought, and I expect CS6 to be a decent advancement too (hopefully it will focus on improving the core editing efficiencies of the app). Maybe it’ll debut at NAB?

You can go to your Keyboard Shortcuts and map Increase Video Tracks Height and Decrease Video Tracks Height to your keyboard. You can also map Increase Audio Tracks Height and Decrease Video Tracks Height.
Note, however, that it will only work if the track is twirled down. If it’s not twirled, it doesn’t resize.

Ah – I’m not up on my FCPX lingo. Thanks for the clarification. I’ve worked with the trial a bit (first release – not 10.0.3) but it was really buggy on my system so I stop playing with it. I guess I never got my head around how FCPX renamed projects and bins and sequences, et al.

What’s the point of having a database with all of this information being tracked by the software if it’s being held hostage by that same software? This is exactly what these databases are good for – tracking assets and giving that information to the editor.

So all projects have to be online all the time? Even for a one man shop that’s silly. When I was the only production guy at a small ad agency I would work on 20+ clients in a year, complete hundreds of commercials/videos, and generate terabytes of footage. Having to keep all of that online all the time because my software won’t share information with me isn’t good. This should be addressed by Apple. It’s a reasonable and logical feature request.

If he’s not working with any AMA material, wouldn’t a Quicktime Reference be faster?
The Same As Source has the benefit of being transferable across systems and archivable, though.
