This was discussed yesterday just about 8 posts down under the title “came across something rather awesome”. There are a few theories there about about how it was done–general consensus is that it looks good and took a long time.

It sounds like the other person put the effect on a filler track. Most effects can be added to filler to create custom transitions, letterbox an entire sequence quickly, etc… Remember, Avid treats filler like media–transparent media that you can apply effects to. I often use this trick for film flashes: Shot 1 cuts to Shot 2 on V1. On V2 I add a cut 6 frames before the end of shot 1 and add a cut 6 frames after the start of shot 2. Add Sapphire_Glow. Keyframe it from 0 brightness at the start of the effect to being fully blown out at the cut, then back down to 0. Covers the cut and saves me having to add edit to the first shot, applying the effect, keyframing it, adding an edit to the second shot, matching the first keyframe with the last keyframe from the previous cut, and then keyframing it back to 0. Sorry if I’m not making any sense, it’s kind of a weird thing to explain. But it’s great for transitions, applying a letterbox to an entire sequence (add a cut at the start of the sequence and the end on the top empty video track, apply the Letterbox effect, render), and it can save render time by applying an effect to only the parts you need it.

720 x 486. Any size variation from this won’t allow you to render it. Otherwise, you can adjust the fields (lower field first recommended for Avid, rather than no fields), quality, resolution, etc. The only restriction I know is the actual comp size. Has to be 720 x 486.

have you tried the sapphire soft focus plug? set it really, really, really low and see if it’s subtle enough. I use it all the time to make digital video a little less digital like. Or drop the sapphire glow on there and set it really really low. It can ad a subtle softening too. otherwise, i’m not sure what to tell you. good luck. if you find a good solution, please post it.

i did it today. Lined the DVD player S-video out into the breakout box (I’m on an old Avid Xpress Meridien…what a workhorse. I love it). Routed the audio through my mixer and set the digitize/capture setting to S-Video and voila! Instant capture from a DVD. Wish I would have figured it out about a month ago when I spent about four hours ripping files, converting, reripping, rendering in after effects to get an Avid happy format, etc…etc…etc… So now when clients ask to bring footage on DVD, say yes.

Check this tutorial out, it’s well done (as are all Cow tutorials). It’s really a pretty easy effect, but a little time consuming.

Thanks for the reply oakmozart. Being relatively new to Avid editing (as I said, only about 1 year under my belt), I figured I was missing something since I didn’t miss the second row. However, I do remember this time last year when I first sat down at the Xpress…I did miss the second row. I had learned on an Adrenaline and it was there. Through me through a loop for a while until I mapped my keyboard and memorized as many shortcuts as I could.
I agree with you on the interfaces. I understand that Avid can’t give everything to lower end users…for example, I would love to have the 3D warp effect, animatte and fluidmotion, but here are workarounds. However, sitting down at an MCA after using Xpress can be frustrating, and vice-versa. You learn how the workarounds, then suddenly you don’t to work around them anymore because the buttons are there.
Speaking of the competition, I just got my first introduction to FCP last weekend and I look forward to learning it. From what I’ve heard about Adobe Premiere 2.0, it may also start putting the heat on Avid. Could make for an interesting year.
