Make a square solid and double click the cicle mask. This will make a perfect circle make on the solid. Use this as a track matte over the footage you were wanting to mask. Then animate the scale of the solid from 0 to whatever you want to make the mask grow from nothing. By adjusting the scale of the solid you’ll be able to numerically adjust the mask and should give you better control.

Lay your footage to VHS. Dub the VHS a couple of times, each time dubbing from the dub. This will degrade the quality and give a nasty, scratchy look. Then redigitize your footage from the VHS and do further treatment from there.

I discovered opening a title from the bin by accident. I was trying to open it in a new window (alt + Double Click), and accidentally did Ctrl + Double Click. Lo and behold, the title tool opened instead of a new monitor. Both surprised and shocked, I added it to a running list of shortcuts and tips I keep by the Avid. That list has made the a faster editor than I ever thought possible. It’s all about the shortcuts. All about the shortcuts.

You’re most likely talking about rotoscoping, a very tedious, time consuming task, but very rewarding when done well. I’ve rotoscoped just a few very short clips and I don’t really like doing it. Do a search of the forums for “rotoscope” and you should get a huge list of posts on different techniques and suggestions. It’s a very broad topic and is rather well covered. Good luck!

What Avid are you on? XPress DV? Xpress Pro? Do you have Mojo? Give us some specs and we’ll keep working on a solution. I’ve brought Hi8 in my Avid Xpress Meridien by lining the Video Out from the camera (aka Composite Out) into the Composite In of my breakout box, then ran the audio through my mixer. I couldn’t get deck control or timecode with it, but it imported just fine. Looked like ass, but it was Hi8. Served its purpose perfectly (undercover footage for a news story).

You can open the title from the bin. Ctrl + Double Click on it. This should open the title in your title tool. Make your changes, Ctrl+S to save, and you’re ready to go. I know it works on Avid Media Composer Adrenaline and Avid Xpress Meridien, even Free DV I think. Should work across the board. Let us know.

I have no idea if this would work, but it would be fun to try. Instead of doing everything in AE, shoot some custom footage to use as a luma matte.
Get a black piece of paper and hang it from a wire in front of some white posterboard (or white paper in front of black posterboard).Set up a camera and zoom in so only the paper fills the screen.
Set that paper on fire from the bottom. Continue shooting until the paper is completely burned away.
Take this footage into AE, desaturate it, add a levels effect and crush the blacks–blow out the whites–up the contrast.
Use this as a luma matte/inverse luma matte over your logo (which one you use will depend on whether you shot black paper over white or white paper over black). The burn will now melt away your logo (in theory). If you want it to melt from the top down, just flip your matte 180 degrees on the x axis. If it needs to burn faster or slower, time remap it.
Again, I have no idea if this would work, but in theory I think it should.

Search the Cow for “Pleasantville Effect” and you’ll come across a list of posts that answer your question. This is brought up about every other week and there have been a lot of different methods for achieving the effect. Sometimes the hardest part is just knowing what to search for! Hope this helps.

Hold down shift and open your General Preferences menu. Click through the menus until you get to the “Schecret” menu. Set AE to purge every x number of frames. With such a huge render, you might want to make this a small number, say every 3 or 5 frames. It seems to increase render times a bit, but at least it renders.
