To take footage directly from Avid to FCP take a look at Automatic Duck.

It’s designed to do this and runs about $500. Otherwise, you can export each clip individually by selecting every clip in a bin and choose File–>Export. Choose Quicktime, go to your options and set the Codec to Animation for best quality. Choose a folder to output to then be prepared for a really long wait.
If you’ve cut a sequence, simply mark In and Outs on the areas of the sequence you want to export, select the tracks you want to export, and do the same as before–File–>Export, choose Quicktime, Use Marks, Use Enabled Tracks, select the right field order, Animation Codec, select the proper size, Video and Audio (if you have video and audio), then select a folder and hit OK. Take a nap. Knit a sweater. Read War and Peace, because this will also take awhile, depending on the length of the sequence.
Warning: You won’t have timecode on any exported clips this way. Doing an UpRez or any type of batch capture in your FCP system will be impossible via the Quicktime export method. To be honest, it would be a lot faster and easier just to Capture and Cut on FCP or Avid instead of trying to port between the two. Unless you buy Automatic Duck. It should help (I’ve never used it, but it gets really good reviews everywhere).

Unless you’re the wolrd’s worst photographer/videographer, definitely charge. And if you are the world’s worst photographer/videographer…well…maybe think about following another career path? 🙂
You’re obviously (hopefully) not the world’s worst, and since you’d be providing a service by running a 2nd or 3rd or whatever number camera you should be paid for it. Maybe not the full rate of a seasoned professional, but if you go in doing it for zero dollars then that’s what everyone will think you’re worth–ZERO. I don’t know about you, but my time is worth more than a “Thanks, the next time I need someone and don’t want to pay I’ll call you so you can get more ‘experience'”.
Charge a fair price, shoot the absolute best you can, get your experience, put together a portfolio, get some clients of your own, raise your rates…rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat.Mike.

I’m a little confused as to what you’re asking, but I think you’re wanting to know how to get your project to recognize the media on the new Firewire drive, right?
1st: Is all of the media at the root of the drive in a folder called OMFI MediaFiles? Note the exact spelling and capitalization. If this new firewire drive is showing up as, say, the F:\ drive, your media should be located in F:\OMFI MediaFiles. If your OMFI MediaFiles folder is anywhere else, your Avid won’t see it.
2nd: Open your OMFI MediaFiles folder and delete the two database files. Restart Avid. It will rebuild the media databases and should relink your media to the new Firewire.
Now, if you have both drives plugged in you’ll likely have problems. After all, how is Avid going to know which files to point to? Just use one drive plugged in at a time. Good luck.

I assume you mean Media Composer Adrenaline versus Media Composer Software Only. Shouldn’t be. Maybe there’s a restriction on the resolution you can capture (MC Software Only might not be able to do 1:1 without a Mojo or Adrenaline Box), but otherwise the process is the exact same. Heck, the process is the same from Xpress DV through Symphony, as far as I know. Only the available resolutions differ. I think DS is a different animal though–never had the opportunity to play on one.

What graphics card are you using? What driver for that card? Did you set up your display according to the Readme? What monitors? What resolution? What version of Avid? More info please!

We have Avid, Sorenson, Photoshop CS2, After Effects 7, Audition, Encore, AvidDVD (or whatever it’s called) and Illustrator CS2 installed on the same machine. Actually, one machine has Avid Xpress Pro with all the other stuff, another has Media Composer with the other stuff, and our older system (Windows 2K) runs Xpress Meridien 6.1 with After Effects 5.5, Photoshop 7, Boris Red 2.5, Sorenson, Cleaner XL, Roxio, and Audacity.
No conflicts on any of the systems. Installing another editor–maybe you’ll get away with it, maybe you won’t. I’ve heard of people installing FCP and Avid on the same system, and Premiere Pro and Avid on the same system without a glitch, but it’s definitely recommended that you not run two editors at the same time.
Try it. Worse that could happen is that you have to wipe the drive and reinstall.
Good practice, though, is only put the software you must have on the computer–I’d leave the word processor stuff to another computer. If you’re using your editing machine for MS Office tasks you’re not editing enough.

Exactly. You may have to delete the database files in your OMFI MediaFiles folder, which Avid will then rebuild. You may not even have to do that–it should relink without a problem.
To be on the safe side, I’d make a couple of copies of my projects–maybe one on a CD, one on a DVD, one on a flash drive, put a copy on the Media Drives, etc… You can never be too careful with your hard work!
Bummer you have to wipe the drives, but at least you can clear out any other junk that might have accumulated since the last fresh install!

Check to make sure “Render on the Fly” is turned on. Sounds like someone turned it off.

Ouch. I’d back up all my projects to CD/DVD/External Hard Drive and reinstall the OS, then reinstall Avid. Start fresh.
