I was running ver 2.1.6 on XP and the system went wacky…(I installed something that installed new version of quicktime- things got bad after that). Anyway, I used system restore, and so on. still wouldn’t work, so I decided to just uinstall Avid and then reinstall it to try to fix the problem. But now I can’t uninstall Avid through the control panel uninstall window. I’ll click on Avid MCA or any of its components to uninstall and get the following windows dialog box:

Setup.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close

Additionally, Avid won’t open at all now and I tried reinstalling over the version that I can’t uninstall, nada. I’m at a loss here. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Ouch. I’d back up all my projects to CD/DVD/External Hard Drive and reinstall the OS, then reinstall Avid. Start fresh.

Yeah, I’ve talked to a couple of people wiping the system is the general consensus. I really juked something up.

Question: If I back up the project files and leave the media files on the media drive alone, when I wipe the system drive and re-install Avid, and drop the project files back in the Avid Project folder, it should re-link to the media on my media drives and in theory, my projects should be intact….correct?

Exactly. You may have to delete the database files in your OMFI MediaFiles folder, which Avid will then rebuild. You may not even have to do that–it should relink without a problem.

To be on the safe side, I’d make a couple of copies of my projects–maybe one on a CD, one on a DVD, one on a flash drive, put a copy on the Media Drives, etc… You can never be too careful with your hard work!

Bummer you have to wipe the drives, but at least you can clear out any other junk that might have accumulated since the last fresh install!

Thanks man, I appreciate the input….now begins the fun. The biggest pain is re-installing all of the third party apps like cleaner, sorenson, AE, Nero, etc.– and finding all of those 45 digit alpha-numeric authorization codes and CD keys. 🙂

But you’re right, it’s good to start with a clean slate every so often, it’ll be like getting a new Avid. Now I just have to finish my projects I’m working on and stripe my media drives. Anyway, thanks again.
