Just save your Marquee title to your Bin as a still frame then export that from your Avid Editor. You can choose numerous formats that way, including .psd. It should maintain the alpha channel to (Check in Photoshop to be sure–it’ll probably be pasted to a black background, but there should be an alpha channel available).

I think you have to install the RAID drivers before you install the OS, but I could be wrong. Ask your Tech Guy if the proper drivers are installed, and if they were install before the OS.
I won’t be at work again until Monday but I’ll ask our IT guy about it. Knowledgable about these things, he is.

Nope. According to Marianna’s post on another forum (she works for Avid and ROCKS! for those of you who wonder who Marianna is) it’s being looked into–not necessarily going to come to fruition, but being looked into. As I scour the dark corners of the internet I’ll be sure to post if I find an update.

Do you have “Render on the Fly” checked? If not, turn it on and see if it makes a difference.

You can totally do motion blur in Avid. It’s just a little tricky, but once you get your head around it it’s really rather easy.
This is how I add motion blur to text.
1. Say your text is on V2. Step into your text effect, copy the matte to your clipboard.
2. Step out of your text effect, cut the matte onto a layer above your text effect (V3).
3. Remove the matte effect from your text layer on V2. This leaves only your fill on V2.
4. Add blur to the matte (V3), then add a Matte Key effect.
5. Keyframe your matte key effect and blur to simulate motion blur and do your move. For example, you want your test to fly on from offscreen right over 8 frames. Keyframe your position (first keyframe offscreen, at frame eight keyframe it where you want it to land). Now do this with your blur–First Keyframe set horizontal blur (for horizontal movement–vertical, naturally, for vertical moves), then at about frame 4 or 5 set another keyframe the same value as your first keyframe. Then at frame 8 make the blur go to zero. This gives you a lot of blur coming on then snaps off when your text lands.
WHY THIS WORKS: Because you are blurring the matte before the matte key you get motion blur without bluring the background (which you would normally get if you applied a blur to a matte key effect). I do it all the time using Sapphire effects.
If you have BCC Blur use that but set it to apply to Title/Matte. That way you don’t have to cut the matte onto a higher layer, etc…

SIDENOTE: Depending on how much blur you add, you may need to add it to your “fill” layer as well, or better yet make your “fill” layer a solid title in the color you want your title. Otherwise you’ll see where the blur goes beyond the fill, leaving dirty edges.

Nope. You can take full sequences from Avid to After Effects and maintain all cuts and layers if you use Automatic Duck, but it doesn’t work the same in reverse. You’d have to render every layer seperately in AE, import into Avid, reapply transfer modes using a Transfer plug-in (Boris, Sapphire, Ect…), etc…. More hassle than it’s worth. But Automatic Duck looks mighty cool for taking sequences from Avid to AE!

Did you transfer your bins before you consolidated the media? If so, that could be your problem.
Do your consolidation and transfer the bins that have the newly consolidated timeline and clips over to your older Xpress. Create a new project by the exact same name as the old one and open the bins into there. You’ll probably run into problems trying to open actual Xpress 5.x projects on a 4.x system. Then hook up your external (can you edit off the external? DV25 footage, probably. 1:1–most likely not). Delete the database files in the OMFI MediaFiles on the external, and start the Avid. Does it rebuild the datebase files? If so, good. Try to relink. Also, be sure you don’t have “Filter drives based on Resolution” checked in your media creation settings checked. If it is checked it might be preventing that drive from being available.

Do you have Mojo? Just hook up your DVD player to your Mojo via component, S-Video or Composite, then set your Capture settings so you don’t have deck control, give it a fake tape name (or the name of the DVD–doesn’t matter, since batch capture isn’t available–no Timecode), and hit record on your capture tool, then play the DVD.
Don’t have Mojo? Get a DVD player with firewire out, or try this:
Copy the .vob files to your desktop. Change the extension (you may have to change your folder view to “Show Files Extensions”) to .mpeg. Sometimes changing it to .mpg will work–I’ve always had better luck with .mpeg. Then convert your now Mpeg file into a Quicktime and import. Time consuming? Yes. Does it work? Has for me.Of course, if this is copyrighted stuff like major motion picture things, don’t do it unless you have the rights. Otherwise it’s illegal, and that’s frowned on here.
There are some .vob converters you can buy too, but I’m not very familiar with them. Do a google search for more info on them.
