The avid might have trouble using the firewire drive as a media drive, but you might be able to edit off of it depending on the resolutions of the media and complexity of the edit.

If it isn’t recognizing the drive then go to your Media Creation settings and uncheck Filter Drive Based On Resolution. Then do a File–>Mount All. This will allow the Avid to recognize the firewire drive as a media drive and to read and write from it. I would still suggest transfering your media off the firewire drive to the media drives of the Adrenaline if the folks you’re working with are ok with that. Don’t transfer the media to the system drive–only to their media drives, and again–drop all of your media files right into the OMFI MediaFiles folder (if you’re only dealing with OMF files–if you’re dealing with MXF files that’s different).

Also, you say the video is a off by quite a few frames. What do you mean? Is the Adrenaline recognizing the media on the firewire drive but the timeline seems to have shifted all the video layers by a few frames? Or is it a playback problem where the video lags? And when you say the audio imported perfectly, are you actually importing it? When you transfer the media files from one system to another you shouldn’t be importing anything–just relinking.

It won’t run. Or at least, I’ve never heard of anyone getting it to run–it’s designed for XP32 bit only.

If you step in and apply a glow to just the fill you’re right–even if the glow expands or steaks the edges of the fill it won’t show because the matte will cut these streaks off. You would need to apply the glow to both…however, when you import something with an alpha it locks the matte key effect so you can’t apply effects to it.

Therefore, step in to the effect, copy the matte key to your clipboard (or Alt+C and it will load it in your source monitor), then step out of the effect and cut it onto the video track above it. This will look like just a black and white piece of video–it is essentially your alpha channel. Apply your glow to that, then Alt+Apply a matte key effect. Any streaking or expanding will now happen to the matte. You may need to apply the same glow effect to the fill too.

If you’re using BCC effects, just drag and apply it to your Title or Matte Key footage (Do Not Alt+Apply it…that would nest the matte key effect, which you don’t want). Your BCC Glow effect will replace the matte key effect, then click Apply To Title. This should limit the glow to just that layer and not also effect the background.

Let me know if this make any sense. It can be kind of hard to explain sometimes.

When you say you had no success, what does that mean exactly? You couldn’t get the timeline to consolidate? You couldn’t get the timeline to relink? The Adrenaline system wouldn’t read the timeline at all? Give us some more details of your workflow–what you’ve done, and what didn’t work.

Otherwise duplicate the timeline you want to transfer, consolidate the media to an external drive, plug that drive into your Adrenaline box and transfer the media files on it (in the OMFI MediaFiles folder at the root of the drive) to the OMFI MediaFiles folder of your Adrenaline’s media drives. Delete the database files of your Adrenaline’s media drives. Start your Avid and it will rebuild your databases.

Copy the bins from the Old Media Composer to the Adrenaline. Start a new project in the Adrenaline of the exact same name as the project on the Old Media Composer, import just the bins from your project. They should relink to the consolidated media you transfered over. If it doesn’t automatically recognize the link, select your clips and go to Bin–>Relink (I think it’s under the Bin command–not at the system right now). They should relink now.

Don’t try to bring the whole project up–just import the bins. Also, make sure you put all of the media in the OMFI MediaFiles folder–no other subfolders/etc… If the media isn’t in the OMFI MediaFiles folder at the root of your drives the Avid won’t see it.

Any of this help? Let us know!

“Render on the Fly” needs to be checked. It should solve your problem.

If you made a black to white gradient in photoshop it will import as a black to white gradient in Avid–if you created a solid to transparent in Photoshop do as Grinner said–save it as a .png on a transparent background–the transparency in photoshop will be saved as your Alpha channel. Import it “Invert Existing Alpha” into Avid just like the others have suggested.

If you just have a black to white gradient you want to use as a matte then import it with “Ignore existing Alpha” checked and apply a matte key effect to it, or a luma key. This will use the black and white and shades of grey as data for your transparency, giving you the result I believe you so desire.

If you want the glow on just the title, step into the title and apply it to the fill. If you want it to affect the outside of the title as well but not the background, follow the steps here:

    https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=45&postid=860749

The example is for a title, but it will work with anything that has an Alpha channel. Post back if you have questions or it isn’t working for you.

  • Hooray! Happy you aren’t starting back at square one with days of digitizing ahead of you. Best of luck!

Honestly, the last I heard is that it was an accident to even allow Xpress to have more than 4 clips in a group, and after it was released it was simply allowed to stay. Avid’s mistake was the user’s gain. Now Avid had another “accident” (makes you wonder, doesn’t it?) that took it away. Everything I’ve heard is that it’s up to the higher powers to decide whether Xpress gets it back. Not comforting to hear, but maybe they’ll do right. It would be a real shame to lose it because I know lots of people will be rather irate to have features removed rather than added.

If Avid does officially remove it, I hope they aren’t thinking it will drive upgrades to Media Composer, because I could see how it would easily instead drive customers to FCP or a similar editor. Without being able to group more clips it makes offlining very difficult, which Xpress is currently incredible at. Well, Xpress 5.2 is. 🙂

Another way is to slow your camera’s shutter speed to about 1/4 or 1/15, lock the camera off and let it roll. Anything moving at pretty much any type of speed will blur because of the lengthened exposure. The hard part (especially when shooting during the day) is capturing video without blowing it out. You may need some filters (neutral density might work, if I’m thinking right) to knock the light down.

Then, bring it into your Avid and put a motion effect on it speeding it up–way up. I’ve timewarped stuff to about 5000% for a good time lapse. It’ll look like it’s skipping frames because…well, it pretty much is.
