  • why do i have to render dissolves?

Posted by Milton Hockman on September 14, 2006 at 2:04 pm

    hi,
i was mainly editing simple things, talking heads with cg, and i never had to render my dissolves.

now, i am doing complex projects with dissolves and pan and scans, and i have to render every dissolve in my project in order to see it when i preveiw my timeline.

i am on Avid Xpress Pro HD.

is this normal? and if so is there a way to preview effects without having to render?

I know if Final Cut Pro, there is a keyboard shortcut to preview a 5 second area of your timeline without rendering to see how an effect will look. does avid have this feature?

You can switch to yellow/yellow mode or green/yellow mode in the timeline to give you more preview streams.

    anything 24fps

you can also go into settings in the project window and go into the video display setting and set the prefill to 10 seconds (max I believe). this will load as many frames as possible into RAM before it attempts to play back and you have a better chance it will be able to deal with a more complex sequence without having to render first. If it is unable to load 10 seconds worth then it is due to a physical RAM limitation, i.e you dont have enough.

Otherwise expert render works well. right click on the timeline and do an expert render to render what it needs to in order to playback.

Video quality settings are a great, quick way to throw away frame information in order to playback without having to render first.

There will come a point when you have to render or do a video mix down in order to continue but you can get pretty complex before booking a ticket there.

Do you have “Render on the Fly” checked? If not, turn it on and see if it makes a difference.

Also, what type of work are you typically doing before having to render, i.e how many video tracks, what resolution, what type of effects?

Your post is titled ‘why do I have to render dissolves’ and my answer to the post title is you dont. but it would/does depend on the 3 pararmeters above.

2 video tracks, with 1:1 resolution. I have to render a simple dissolve at the beginning of my video.
down the timeline i have many pan and scans and color corrections on clips.
