I posted this link because it surprised me. With Avid gone it gave Apple full rein to show everyone at NAB that they were commited to post production and were the best for your business. Without one of their main competitors there to refute that (in a booth–Avid will be there), it was a great opportunity.

Avid pulled out to refocus their efforts by meeting directly with clients and holding more informative, smaller, customer focused gatherings in Vegas and across the country (world, maybe?) throughout the year. It’s no secret that Avid is trying to turn their ship around through their customer focused initiatives, and wanted to use the money from NAB to follow up on their promises.

Now, Apple is doing pretty much the exact same thing. They’re pulling from NAB but they’ll be in Vegas to meet with clients/potential clients. It sounds like they’re pulling from a lot of trade shows to do exactly what Avid announced they were doing–going straight to the customers instead of setting up shop on a showroom floor shouting answers for 5 minutes to whoever walks up and wants to punch some buttons.

Avid has said time and again that they’re going to make some big announcements this month–who knows what they are, but since pulling from NAB they don’t have to hold their cards until April. Apple could be following suit, and it would make sense to do so.

I also read all the “Avid is dead!” threads, and I’m also suprised that there hasn’t been more speculation/opinion on Apple pulling out, considering how deep their pockets are and the great opportunity NAB would have presented. Spending a million at NAB isn’t going to hurt Apple like it would hurt Avid, or Media 100, or other businesses that live and die by their success in post production only.

Oh well, time will tell if this new direction works for either company.

You can install Avid and FCP on the same drive, but I wouldn’t recommend it. The potential for conflict will always be there, and the upgrade paths for both programs vary wildy.

For example, Avid isn’t supported on Leopard right now. If you plan on running FCP under Leopard, create a new partition on your drive and install Tiger on it. If you plan on keeping your Quicktime updated (bad idea right now!) install Avid on a seperate partition–I’m sure you know that Avid supports specific versions of quicktime, and if update too far Avid stops working. Such is life.

To be completely safe, and if you only want to do this once, seperate hard drives and dual boot, or partition your main drive and dual boot.

Even Avid is moving away from OMF and has implemented AAF export.

If you buy 5.6 you can use it to run 5.0 or any previous version. Dongles are backward compatible.

If you buy 5.6 your 5.0 dongle will not run it–you would need to buy the upgrade from 5.0 to 5.6 and run a dongle updater on the 5.0 dongle, which will “bless” it to run 5.6.

It doesn’t matter that you’re a FCP user, although I don’t think this issue is caused by Avid’s codecs.

Go to http://www.avid.com/exchange/forums and post in the General Forum. See if anyone can replicate the problem or knows a workaround–there a lot of editors that run both systems (it’s smart to know and/or run both if financially possible).

Don’t be surprised to hear “You’re using the wrong Quicktime/OS for Avid/Avid codecs” because…well, you are. But there may still be a workaround.

Avid just released updates to it’s new codecs. You could try installing these to see if it fixes your problem.

Go here on your system:

C:\Program Files\Avid\Utilities\nVidia

When you install Avid it gives you the driver that supported when that version is released. Just uninstall the old nVidia driver, reboot, install the new one, reboot, and you’re good to go.

I answered you in the FCP forum, but for the sake of the people in this forum–it’s probably Quicktime 7.4 that’s your problem.

While Avid isn’t supported on Leopard yet, there are people that run it using some workarounds and from what I’ve read–it runs fine. Quicktime 7.4, however, has caused all kinds of problems with all kinds of software–I wouldn’t be surprised if this is related to it.
