  • exporting AVID DNxHD in 6.0.2 and Leopard and QT 7.4

Posted by Todd Reid on January 29, 2008 at 12:53 am

I’ve exported to this codec MANY times prior to upgrading my system to 6.0.2/Leopard/QT 7.4 on a new octocore xeon.

When I go to export I choose AVID DNx millions of colors+/720p/59.94 145 8 bit.
I used to get a slider to choose best quality, now I get no option at all.

I assumed that would mean everything would be highest quality, but when “ok” out of that dialog box, to the “movie settings” dialog box, under video it states that the quality is set to Medium.

My first attempt, before I noticed the “medium” looked MUCH worse than it used to. Especially in the dark areas. There is A LOT of noise introduced, that definitely isn’t on the video when I view it on my Panasonic 1700.

This is the codec that my client needs for their broadcast delivery system, so I need to make this work as it has in the past.
Any tips on how to change the quality to highest or best?
Anyone else notice the quality slider gone?
    Please help.

Is this codec available for Leopard yet from Avid? Are the Avid systems currently approved for use on Leopard yet?

Those are the first two questions I would have.

    Hey Walter,

I’m having trouble finding any information about whether DNx is compatible with Leopard.

If it wasn’t leopard-ready, wouldn’t I have more trouble than it just being lower quality than I’m used to seeing?
It seemed to have installed just fine,
My issue is that I don’t have the ability to change the quality from medium to best.

Anyone used the avid codecs in Leopard yet?

Not necessarily. After Effects was causing DVCPro HD renders to be blown out in Color until AE 8.0.2 came out a few days ago. But the application itself was operating just fine and so long as the files did not go into Color, they were perfect.

Contact Avid Tech Support and ask them if their codecs work in Leopard and QT 7.4. QT 7.4 has been causing quite a few issues up and down this and other forums.

    dang it all.

I thought I was one of the lucky ones that wasn’t having any trouble with my new setup, clean installs all around.

I even bragged elsewhere on the forum that my system was working (even specified that I had qt7.4 in that post.

    again….

    dang it all!!!!

No, Avid isn’t approved for Leopard yet, but there are folks running it using some workarounds to get it to run. Word on the street is 2nd quarter support for Leopard (if I remember right).

Your problem could be quicktime 7.4–also not approved for Avid (is it approved for any application, yet, besides iTunes?). If you need to export DNxHD, try rolling back to Quicktime 7.3 and try again.

    Good to know.

Luckily, I still have my MacBook Pro setup, so I will transfer QTs over to it and export the DNx files. Cause, like most posts here…..I’m on a deadline and have to deliver by wednesday for broadcast.

So far, 2 projects on new system and this is the first problem I’ve run into with QT 7.4.
(once I did a clean instal on a new computer)
    (knocking on wood….)

doing a test export now, but I’m still locked into medium quality. I do however now have the ability to add an alpha channel. Which does me absolutely no good, since I’m delivering final segments.

We’ll see what this looks like, hopefully medium quality is good enough, I’m not holding my breath though.

still no way to change from medium quality, still blotchy darks.

    Here are some still examples…
same video timeline, except #2 went through a (what I call) Final Cut Quicktime, then brought into MBP system (project isn’t downward compatible). Those jaggies do not show up in the video, must be the pct conversion.
Setup is supposed to be a romantic meal, so it is dark on purpose, to try to simulate a cozy restaurant.

#1 new AVID LE 1.8 codec (FC 6.0.2 leopard, QT7.4 octocore system)
    https://idisk.mac.com/toddreid//Public/new%20codec_1.8.pct

#2 previous AVID LE 1.6 (FC 6.0.1 Tiger, WT7.3 macbook pro system)
    https://idisk.mac.com/toddreid//Public/previous%20codec.pct

As I mentioned above, I am stuck with this codec as my largest client requires me to deliver in this codec (surprise-they have AVIDs!).

Any thoughts or suggestions as to how I tell AVID about this issue.
As a final cut user, I don’t think I have much pull with them
