Yes, would go for the fusion drive (in for a penny). And definitely, yes on backup. I plan on using a Time Machine for backup of the system drive and then for media–primary storage on a T-bolt Raid 1 and then backed up again to a esata Raid 5, which gets backed up every night–or therabouts.
Hope the speedtests come out soon. This purchase is in part motivated by end of year taxes so need to make it by 12/31.
Big picture, I’m pretty sure the 3.2 or 3.4 iMac will be beefy enough for our needs. We don’t do 4K, Red, etc. Mostly C300, XDCAM, DSLR these days.
But really wish I knew what the roadmap is for towers. I know if I pull the trigger I’ll have buyer’s remorse. That’s always how it goes…

I had something similar happen about 5 months ago. It sounds like it may be a corrupt event. Do you use event manager? Try hiding all your existing events and projects, then try opening up X and creating a new event and project and see if you can get it to run. Then, one by one, try bringing back on events and projects to see if you can locate the problem.
You may have already run through these steps, so apologies there.
FWIW, I also recommend the suite of maintenance projects from Digital Rebellion–the crash log analyzer here may be helpful and also the corrupt file finder.
When I had the problem, it turns out I had a jpeg that exceed FCPX max pixel size–which I think is 2500px on a side, and I had a hi res Getty pic that was over 4,000px.
God speed.

FWIW, I strongly recommend Pro Versioner from Digital Rebellion. It seems to me as essential as Event Manager X. You will sleep more soundly.

Well, try this if you can (it resolved a crashing scenario I was having when trying to export).
Delete ALL Project Render files.
Select the Project in the Project library and File>Delete Project Render files.
Apparently, according to the Apple tech, render files sometimes get corrupted and weak havoc. It’s worth a shot.
Good luck.

November 7, 2012 at 8:52 pm in reply to: Best (meaning, “fastest”) Way for a Professional Editor to Learn Final Cut Pro X?The Ripple training series is quite good. I’ve heard Larry Jordan’s is too. I’mm sure both will get you where you want to be.
I’ve been cutting on FCP since 2000. Made the switch to X in January. Never looked back. It’s really not hard to learn. It’s just different in some fundamental ways. My suggestion is to start with a real project that has a for off due date and jump in. Then do the training whenever you get hung up.
IMHO, if you don’t master to tape, FXPX 10.0.6 is superior to 7 in just about every respect. Good luck.

Ive been cutting on X for the past 8 months. Each update is better than the last. It is now really hitting its stride. That said, it takes A WHILE to really learn to appreciate the magnetic timeline. It is initially infuriating. Once you get beyond that and start to understand it, it is actually a fantastic time saver, and lets you make changes much quicker and easier. But be warned it does take some time to get used to. In this case, different is better.

A couple of other things: purge both your event and project render files. You could be maxing out ram that way. Lastly, how many events and and/or projects do you have open in your library at the same time? If you have a lot open simultaneously, that could really kludge your performance. We use Event Manager X so that only only event and projects relating to one project (client) are open at a time.

Hmm. Something is definitely bonkers there. Do you have any still images in the project? Jpegs? If they are over, I think, 4000 pixels on a side, FCPX will go nuts.
Also, have you trashed prefs?
Lastly, are you running 10.0.5? I had similar problems back when running 10.0.2, but every 10.0.4 and up, nothing like that. These days, running fine and zippy.
It really sounds like either your events, project or the program itself is corrupt. Sorry.

July 25, 2012 at 8:21 pm in reply to: Is this a first? FCP X experience REQUIRED for job?!We’re a small production company and we’ve switched from legacy to X and have been hiring two different freelance editors for various projects. In addition to ramping up on X, they know legacy and PPro. So, another data point.

I think it’s Apple’s way of saying “Please, don’t use page turns.” 🙂 Unless you are really going for that ADO look from the 80s…
No, no. Sounds like a definite bug. The feedback form is right on the “Final Curt Pre” menu bar next to the apple icon in X. I use it frequently.
