  • another FCP X crashing post…..

Posted by Tim French on December 5, 2012 at 12:25 pm

    Hi

I’ve been checking posts about FCP X crashing on launch for the last 2 days and have tried everything so please excuse yet another post asking for help on the subject.

I have had it working perviously but upgraded to 10.0.06 and thought this is the time to do a job in anger on fcp x, only when launching it loads up, works for a nano second and then crashes, wheel of joy time.

I have trashed preferences, done a quick fix, removed and reinstalled with digital rebellion. I have absolutely no previous events and projects anywhere, completely trashed them.

I have verified and repaired Disk Permissions.

I have quit all background processes I have found running (dropbox etc.)

    No joy

I have built a new user profile and that launched, hurrah, only I have issues not using my present profile.

what I find interesting is it launches, creates a new event (itself) sits for a couple of seconds and then crashes, what is it’s load procedure? what does it go looking for at that moment?

Based on what you have posted this does not sound like an FCP X issue. It sounds like a system issue. Have you run Disk First Aid? Open up the Font Book app and validate all your fonts under your current user profile? If it works under a new profile then something is funky in your user profile.

Absolutely it’s this user account, but would be a real pain to 1st birthday this system.

I’ve disk 1st aided and validated the fonts (including pulling them all out) still crashing, just trying to work out what the hell it is, FCP X is the only application not working, everything else including FCP 7 is working absolutely fine.

Even if it is just FCP X that is showing the problem it could be something else that is causing it. Be happy you don’t have my situiation. Every month or so Adobe CS 4 decides it will no longer launch at all. Therefore I spend about an hour every month uninstalling and reinstalling.

My first thought is font corruption. Check you ~/library/fonts folder. Disable those if there are any.

Are you using external monitoring? Matrox beta drivers for 10.0.6 are cause problems on my system. Disable or uninstall it.

    Also remove these:

    ~/library/com.apple.FinalCut
    ~/library/com.apple.FinalCutPro

If that doesn’t work, open up your “Console” app a view “All Messages” then launch FCP X. It might give you some more info.

Have you tried starting in safe boot mode?

Hi, Yes tried that and then FCP X of course needs the graphics card so won’t start in safe boot mode….

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, I just think My Mac pro has it in for FCP x, laptop runs it fine. I think it is a bit old fashioned and won’t try anything new….

Tried looking at the console, nothing…..

Actually I’m on an original Mac Pro 2006, 20GB RAM, Radeon 5770 and FCP X works beautifully. I even get real time playback of native Red r3d 4K.

Did you happen to disable all your motion templates and plugins?

    ~movies/Motion Templates
    /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro
    /Library/Plug-Ins/FxPlug

Also before you throw in the towel, give Apple a call.

When all else fails frankly some times a user account just gets corrupted and you have to start over your user account. It will probably be a good thing for you as there is a bunch of junk that gets accumulated in there.

Well, try this if you can (it resolved a crashing scenario I was having when trying to export).

    Delete ALL Project Render files.

Select the Project in the Project library and File>Delete Project Render files.

Apparently, according to the Apple tech, render files sometimes get corrupted and weak havoc. It’s worth a shot.

    Good luck.

    Thanks,

I can’t even get it running long enough to delete render files from within the application. I have removed the application and all files, reinstalled (no joy) I’m pretty sure I’ve deleted any render files. I’ve validated and even removed all fonts (no joy) and removed all motion templates, which of course fcp x only goes and pulls everything back in again.

    not working.

Every other application works well, all adobe, Avid, motion and fcp 7 you name it, it’s only FCP X.

But again thanks for all your help.

I had something similar happen about 5 months ago. It sounds like it may be a corrupt event. Do you use event manager? Try hiding all your existing events and projects, then try opening up X and creating a new event and project and see if you can get it to run. Then, one by one, try bringing back on events and projects to see if you can locate the problem.

You may have already run through these steps, so apologies there.

FWIW, I also recommend the suite of maintenance projects from Digital Rebellion–the crash log analyzer here may be helpful and also the corrupt file finder.

When I had the problem, it turns out I had a jpeg that exceed FCPX max pixel size–which I think is 2500px on a side, and I had a hi res Getty pic that was over 4,000px.

    God speed.

as per this thread I used the digital rebellion uninstaller and then reinstalled and did not fix it. So I tried uninstalling via https://support.apple.com/kb/HT5149 and then installed again and it has held for 2 days now. mountain lion and mbpr
