Yes, understand completely.
What I’m wondering is: what is good breakout box for use with the Apple Cinema Display? I think I’ll get better results with the ACD. FWIW, had frequent issues with the MXO 2 when I was using FCP 7. Wondering if there is a better solution for FCPX and the ACD.
Thoughts?

What was the camera original source? The horizontal stuttering can be artifact of CMOS sensors. In other words, it may not be FCPX, but rather baked into the footage.

The Crash Log Analyzer in the Pro Maintenance pack can be helpful in determining what is causing crashes. Also try deleting your event render files and trashing prefs.
Good luck.

Well, I’m in the New York area, working in corporate video mostly, and from that perspective I can say it is. I know of a number of editors who have made the switch, and a lot who haven’t. One positive is that it is getting easier for us to find good FCPX freelance editors.
And here’s some data points: I shoot all over the place. Was just in Atlanta and learned of an editor who switched and is loving it. Was working with a crew in Tokyo and they had switched. Was shooting in Chicago–FCPX still had a lame rep.
So, it does seem be gaining traction, bit by bit. Seems like still a long way to go to make inroads into broadcast and feature work though.

I forgot to mention I wholeheartedly recommend the maintenance pack from Digital Rebellion. The crash log analyzer is very useful and has helped me identify similar conflicts in the past.
Also, the Pro Versioner utility is a must with FCPX (which doesn’t have an autosave vault–it updates the same backup every 15 minutes). Another must: Event Manager.
That said, I can’t imagine going back to 7.

January 22, 2013 at 2:38 pm in reply to: FCPX crashes immediately when selecting share master fileI’ve had this issue intermittently. Try this:
Delete both the event and project render files. Then duplicate the project file. Select that to export, after letting it render the whole timeline first.
Sometimes a corrupt render file can gum up the works.
Try this too: select another formate to see if it’s just the master file format that is giving you problems. Or changes the specs in the settings (e.g., 444 not 222) etc. to see if that helps.
Officially, if you are still having issues, Apple will tell you to delete FCPX and then re-install. But that’s a pain. I’ve had this problem twice and was able to resolve with out reinstalling.
FWIW, most of the time, FCPX works really well for us.
Good luck.

In terms of the stills, size matters. I believe FCPX cannot deal with an image greater than 4000 pixels on a side. I try to keep mine no larger than 2500.

Don’t forget the easiest key–F. Mark in and outs and just hit F. That marks the selection as a favorite. Then just do a seach on all your favorites and voila, instant selects bin. And if you are also adding keywords, you can refine your search to Favorites/Close Up or whatever.

It took me a while to figure out how to make versions or strings to refer back to etc. Working with X, I have found that it just super easy to duplicate and rename the project and then continue cutting on the new version.
Once you get the hang of it, it couldn’t be simpler. Also, it took me a while to figure out that you can PLAY projects from the library. So you can in fact hope back and forth and look for that sweet ending soundbite in Cut 3 that you know want to bring back to Cut 7.
The compound clip route is also completely valid approach if you like that. And also super easy (a couple of keystrokes). I just prefer the other route.
My larger point would be this: when you find yourself unable to do something in X, it’s most often because there’s just a different way of doing it. And that new way is 90% of the time better and faster. But there will be that initial period of “WTF?!?!?!?!”. But over time, as you work with it, you will come to understand the intelligence behind the software. And if you are like me, you will never look back to FCP7 (which I used for 10 years).
It’s not perfect but it’s pretty darn tasty.

Yeah, always a tough decision: buy something pretty damn good right now or wait for the next best thing.
And FWIW, I have found the FCPX support team to be very responsive and helpful. They’ve reached out to me a number of times after I have filled out the support form on the website.
And with the enhancements/fixes of 10.0.6, I’m a pretty happy camper.
