Open your ‘System Settings’ under the Final Cut Pro menu at the top of the screen.

The very first line in the box under the Scratch Disk tab will give you the path to your scratch disk.

Navigate to that folder in Finder and click File > Get Info.

You may have to click the little lock in the lower right hand corner to be able to change permissions. You will need an administrator password for that. If you need to, change all to ‘Read & Write’. Then click on the little gear icon at the bottom of the pane and choose ‘Apply to enclosed items…’.

    Try your render again.

Well it is good to hear that it has been done. In fact, I am sure the distinct feeds (in one case, 2 different feeds from the same camera via the switcher) were both locked to the house tri-level, which is what lead me to think there was something else going on. I will have to give it another try after the holidays. Thanks for the info.

So you want to export QT’s with 4-channel mono audio? First, you can change you the discreet channels setting back to channel grouped. Probably better is to re-load your sequence preset, so you know you are starting off correct…

There should be 2 steps to this: First is to set the “Audio Outputs” in “Sequence Settings” to the desired config. You would want to set the outputs to 4 and then switch both of the “Grouping” to “Dual Mono”. It sounds like you had this part correct.

Then you have to assign the tracks in the actual sequence by right-clicking on the track (I use the lock as a good place to click) and select the appropriate channel where you want it to output.

You should then have a multi-track audio QT file…

Hope that is what you are looking for.

Correct. I meant to say resulting in a discernible pattern of 3 full frames and 2 interlaced. The pattern is about fields, not frames but that is a good way to explain how to see the result. Thank you for the clarification. I want to make sure the info is disseminated correctly. As for FCP not executing this correctly, I don’t know what you mean. Would you clarify?

Yeah, I would probably wait to view it on a broadcast monitor. If you need to, are you viewing with your canvas set to fit to window? I always recommend viewing everything, especially interlaced material in your canvas and viewer at an evenly divisible zoom factor. 100%, 50%, 25%. See if that helps.

That is a good thing for 2 reasons, first that means that it should have been done correctly. Second, if you need to, you can easily remove that pulldown and go back to 23.98. This might not be the way for you to go though because there are other steps to consider with this workflow.

But I forgot to ask how you are viewing your material. Are you watching it on a broadcast monitor or only in FCP? I want to make sure you aren’t doing extra unnecessary work.

How was the footage converted? Was it converted by adding 3:2 pulldown? The first thing I would do is to check the cadence. Count the number of whole frames vs. the number of interlaced frames. You can do this in FCP if you make your Canvas/Viewer 100% zoom as opposed to ‘fit to window’. This should be a repeating pattern. The standard/usually best way to do this is by 3:2 (or 2:3) pulldown, 3 full frames and 2 interlaced, repeating. If it is, you can reverse telecine and experiment with other patterns. If it is not, you could have more judder than you want. Hopefully you don’t have 2:2:2:4 pulldown. There are good descriptions of all this here: Wikipedia Telecine, and here: Apple Help.

June 2, 2011 at 4:52 am in reply to: Droplet image sequence to prores convertor?

In compressor, you can’t drag and drop a folder or all the files of the image sequence, but you can still import an image sequence either to the open job or a new job. Unfortunately, it won’t work with droplets either, but you still only have a limited number of clicks to get to what you want.

The keyboard shortcut for ‘New Job With Image Sequence…’ is Apple+Option+I under the job menu. There was a bug where the movie didn’t calculate the framerate correctly, but I thought I saw that was fixed…Might want to test it out.
