How about precomposing after the first key?

Where are you seeing it just has black in the background? If you open a QT with an Alpha in QT Player, you will see a black background. You need to re-import and overlay it on something to see the transparency. And the Animation codec is correct to deliver quicktimes with transparencies.

  • Wait, you can see a XSAN volume from a Pro Tools bay as well as a PC too…

In an FCP enviornment, you can easily AFP/SMB mount from those clients (or better a seperate server). You don’t need anything more than DV really to mix, which you should easily be able to pull over ethernet. Same goes for PC, unless you are editing/GFX at full resolution. But you can see you at least have access. Not over fibre, but fast enough to mix for sure…

To me, XSAN is the best for multiple FCP users. The only drawback in my mind is the 2GB/s XRAID Fibre limit. That limits online a little, unless you want to have many XRAIDS. Otherwise, I would also tend to recommend Facilis’ Terrablock. Like SanMP without all the management…

    Best of luck.

  • Jeremy,

You are right about Compressor. I was more speaking to the hypothetical, “if you could install” sort of thing. Quicktime Pro is a great alternative, basically Compressor without the interface. Compressor is based on QT after all. Good luck.

  • Guys,

It is possible, you will want to look up “Folder Actions” in Finder. From there, depending on what you want to do, you could use Automator to call QT Pro too encode. Good luck. More people should think about these types of automatic scripted options to help out workflow pains and manage time. If you have multiple computers, and you could install compressor on the others, you might think about Qmaster like Mark is talking about to save time.

Are you freezing no matter where you play on the timeline or on one clip?

What version of FCP are you using? What codecs are you using? What filters are you using? What are you rendering? Trash preferences? What drive are you rendering to? Is it fast enough for what you are doing?

Possible you have to render in high-precision YUV…
