Have you tried tried trashing preferences? I’ve heard of firewire issues being fixed by the good old trash & restore.

    Here’s one for FCPX

This was given the best doco award at the recent My State Student Film Awards. Directed, partly shot and completely edited by an 8 year old. It’s her first film and yes her mum is a film maker (usually horror comedy not doco). She did get some help with filming but totally told her mum what to shoot.

When the tape is playing you should be able to display info that shows the frame rate. Also if it is the same camera that shot the footage, check what the frame rate was set to in the camera menu. Chances are it will be the same unless you change frame rates on that camera.

[Nick Myers] “I cut the film “Sweet Country” that screened at Sundance about a week ago!
cut it on FCP7, which still works for me ”

I can’t wait to see it Nick. Was the aspect mask trick in Resolve I suggested for this film?

[Bill Davis] “Huh? At worst, Michael – this issue appears to effect one range within one tool in the 10.4 update.”

Luma and gamma are the first controls graders reach for. Most editors are working in Rec 709 so the fact that gamma is the problem, a lack of reaction to it not working properly is a clear indicator that the wheels are not a big deal or that perhaps many are just ignoring them and using an alternate plugin. Either way Apple may have been better off reacting to things that editors are requesting that there are no alternatives to.

Of course people complain about bugs if it affects their workflow in a major way. So I stand by my opinion that the wheels are not a big deal or I expect there would have been more complaint.

H264 is a difficult codec for some computers so that’s why I asked what machine. If it is a laptop or an old PC the CPU might not be coping. Also when you say internal HD, is that your system drive as well? HD (1080 which is also the vertical pixel aspect) is not difficult for most machines.

If your conversion software can output DNxHD that is a much better choice to edit with. Also best practice is for your media to be on a different drive to your system (C:) drive. If an external drive preferably USB3 or better. It’s difficult to guess the problems without some basic info but that’s my best guess

What format did you convert to? What hard drive are you using and how is it connected? What machine & OS? What frame rate and pixel aspect? What software are you using to convert with?

[Bill Davis] “I’m sure people who live and breath traditional grading processes still vehemently disagree and have their concerns – but for this crowd and in this room – it was just NOT a big focus – at all.”

If that is the reaction then Apple may have wasted a lot of development time on giving X editors a tool that they don’t really need. I’m looking forward to the reaction when Apple fix it because I am confident they will. If there is barely a ripple then Apple did waste time. If the reviews are gushing post fix then it says editors are less than honest with Apple about fixing problems.
