Did you check to see if you accidentally hit link when everything was selected in that wonky timeline? The fact that it selects all suggests you might have all the clips linked.

Resolve is now up to version 15.2.2 and has improved performance over version 14. Also it may be OK for the latest Mac OS. As a general rule check the BM support pages and forums before upgrading an OS to make sure you remain compatible with the software and your hardware.

Apple have a history of pushing out new OS that might make your hardware and other software obsolete. Unless there is a compelling reason to upgrade an OS it is always worth sitting for a while on an older version to see if compatibility issues pop up for others.

I can answer the first part of your question. No it’s not Apple Talk yet.

As a user of Bluetooth speakers, they are OK for audio only applications as the delay makes them out of sync with video/ sound monitoring. So I can understand that Apple might prefer you use wifi to avoid the delay. The web pages say it connects automagically with an iOS device.

My computers are in the room next door and I just run extension cables into the studio. However if I need access to the computers they are in a rack unit and easy to access spare ports. USB 3.1 or c extension cables might be the best bet.

I’ve had a look at a few of the new BM training vids. They are useful even for experienced users as I picked up a few tips and shortcuts.

There are some other good free Resolve tutorials particularly to get your head around Fusion which I have found helpful –

Given Fusion Studio on PC has had ProRes encoding for a while now, I am surprised that this hasn’t been included in the Win version of Resolve Studio.

As others have said it is up to Apple as I’m sure Blackmagic who have ProRes encoding in their cameras would also wish to include it in all versions of Resolve.

Totally Bob. So many other bottlenecks for 8K. What I read from the article is that if I was a post house with grunty computers and doing lots of r3d footage, I might pop a second RTX Titan card in the box instead of a Red Rocket to save $3000+ and get the same result.

I’m currently specing for a new computer that will be capable of 8k even though I’m not expecting to need it just yet. So it’s on my radar and this info does help to inform me about the slots, cooling & power supply I will need.

Looks like the Red Rocket card will no longer be a product. If an RTX card can replace it at a much cheaper price I can’t see why the Red Rocket will sell.

The only flaw in the article’s argument is it doesn’t explain how you can do 8k on cheaper hardware without acknowledging the needs of big fast drives and TB3/ USB-c as mandatory. At least the tech is available now but it’s not exactly ‘for the masses’.

December 12, 2018 at 3:36 am in reply to: Adobe pro video apps now support ProRes on Windows

I’m waiting to see if Resolve on Win will also have ProRes encoding. Fusion (paid) does. I don’t use Adobe so this doesn’t change things for me, but I’m still pushing away from quicktime and ProRes in favour of the DNxHR family in an mxf wrapper. I know ProRes can be in an mxf now but ProRes remains a proprietary codec rather than an open codec like DNx. I note that many broadcasters world wide are dropping ProRes as a requirement and it is mostly an option.

I was disappointed that BM dropped DNx not long ago from the Ursa cameras. Once BRAW is available for the whole Ursa Mini family I will be dropping ProRes completely.

  • Thanks Oliver. So it’s just the death of the QT wrapper. That’s fine by me.
