The DCP spec calls for ext3 formatted drives (Linux format) but in practice most cinema management systems run on Windows. Why cinemas don’t have MacDrive or a free ext3 util to mount any drives on Windows is beyond me. Not expensive and saves hundreds of dollars and anxiety getting the right formatted drives delivered. I gave up doing DCPs as so many cinemas are not compliant with the format. Don’t assume they can reliably read exFAT either. Just give them NTFS formatted drives. And you won’t get the drives USB cable back most likely.

Resolve already has custom controllers. Although it does recognise Tangent devices, I doubt that they will bother to support this. Their business model is based on their hardware as the software is free or really cheap.

Steal away. It’s a perfect word for adding a spiritual dimension back into technology.

  • [Oliver Peters] “I get the underpowered hardware & lack of expandability arguments, however, every time I compare similar configurations from a name-brand PC manufacturer against a comparable Mac, the Mac is often lower cost.”

That may be true in your neck of the woods. Here we joke about the ‘Australia Tax’ that many tech companies add to their product pricing. Apple & Adobe are both guilty of that. I’m sure Dell & HP gouge as well. Thanks to the web I can buy components directly and build my own much cheaper.

As to reliability and IT support, I’ve heard as many stories about the extra cost of Macs as users take less interest in learning how the OS works because of sheer expectation that it will just work automagically.

Does it match your timeline rate exactly? How are you monitoring? Just the computer screen or an external monitor via a Decklink card? Progressive credit rolls are difficult and there are formulas for the speed per frame rate to get best results.

Ok. Another approach is to use the EDL timeline to reveal in bin then force conform the corresponding AAF timeline shot.

I don’t know why time remap attributes are not copying. Might be a bug?

  • For me Tim the inertia is artistic type people just assuming Apple has the hardware and software that ‘just works’. Few of them has even taken the time to look at alternate hardware and OSs. Same with many editors who understandably don’t want to bother learning a new OS and assuming Win 10 is still like XP. Mental inertia.

I was at a festival last weekend showing films off my Dell laptop running Linux Mint. There were two video tech guys setting up the screens and projectors. One hated Macs (ten years doing IT support) the other loved them. The guy who loved them came to me about half an hour later and asked if I knew why his MacBook Pro wouldn’t boot. He sat in on one screening and had a close look at Linux and the wealth of connectors on the Dell for AV work and just maybe he might think outside the ecosystem he loves next time he has to buy a new laptop. He seemed impressed that no matter what drive format people threw at me with their films (some were made during the festival) that I could read and play everything.

As a quick fix have the AAF import and the EDL reconnected timeline and copy the effects and settings from the AAF timeline to the EDL timeline. If you select a clip and then copy it, select the corresponding clip in the EDL timeline and ALT paste it allows you to copy attributes from clip to clip.

  • The inertia and loyalty to Mac hardware is a bit perplexing to me especially as the trashcan was not a good solution. If Apple don’t get it right with the new Mac Pro they’ve promised then I don’t see iMac form factor being a viable thing for a market place that needs pure grunt and potentially 8k source footage.

[Shawn Miller]”I think I’m the only one who doesn’t mind cDNG sequences.”

They work OK in Resolve. But from what I have seen of 8:1 and 12:1 BRAW cDNG has more overhead and bigger files
