Blackmagic drops cDNG from their cameras.
Since we all love a good format war here in the COW pastures, it’s interesting to note that Blackmagic is dropping cDNG recording from their cameras in the most recent firmware updates. If you’ve watched the Grant Petty video he mentioned a patent issue and the obsolescence of the format with BRAW being a better format.

No doubt Resolve will continue supporting it for playback and there are no firmware upgrades to make it go away for those of us he may be using it with older Blackmagic Cameras.

I wonder if anyone using or working with cDNG would still prefer that over BRAW.

Unless he allows BRAW on the older Ursa Mini 4.6 it’s my only choice for RAW. I will be jumping into a BMPCC4k soon and I wish I could just have one codec on both cameras but I’m reading the tea leaves that the older minis are left behind. Shame to not support those of us who waited patiently and supported the 4.6

cDNG is a cludge in post.

I’m in a similar situation. I have a BMP4k on order, but I still have an original UM4.6k… I don’t think BRAW will come to the older Ursa Mini’s. Strange thing though, if cDNG is causing a big enough headache for BMD to EOL the UMPro… why not EOL the original 4.6k and the UM4k as well? It seems odd to stop production on a newer camera but keep two older product lines going.

I think I’m the only one who doesn’t mind cDNG sequences. Then again, it’s probably not that common for a camera operator to regularly deal with multi layered OpenEXR and .tiff sequences. ☺

They work OK in Resolve. But from what I have seen of 8:1 and 12:1 BRAW cDNG has more overhead and bigger files
