Firstly in SD 16:9 is created by either anamorphic squeeze or letterboxing. Anamorphic is preferable as letterboxing simply uses about 65% of the frame so you are dropping resolution. So anamorphic is the correct widescreen option.

Secondly field dominance in DV is lower and in HD formats it is upper. Chances are you are simply getting a field order problem which can be corrected by applying the shift fields filter. Normally FCP does this automatically when you edit in material with a different field order.

Perhaps in the way you are converting the footage, you are baking in a field order problem.

  • “When importing the clip into Compressor, Video info appears as;
    Econded Bounds: 1280×1080
    Display bounds: 1920×1080
Pixel Aspect Ratio: DVCProHD 1080i (16:9)
    Frame rate: 29.97 ”

    Strange numbers. Anamorphic 16:9 is 1440 x 1080. True 16:9 is 1920 x 1080 but 1280 x 1080 is weird.

Samantha, distorted audio would have been apparent if you were monitoring with headphones. Meter watching is not the way to monitor sound quality.

As David said, digital audio stops at zero. Everything is then clipped and no there is no magic software to fix it. Some audio restoration systems like CEDAR can make some improvements on certain types of distortion but digital clipping is not easy to repair unless the clipping is slight. Fuzzy sounds a bit beyond that. Minor peak clipping can be helped.

Further to Shane’s good advice, make sure the sample rate of the converted aif files is 48Khz.

If there is any drift it may be 23.976 versus 24 which requires that the audio is slowed by .1% to resync.

[David Roth Weiss] “a 0dB analog test tone is equal to -12dB in the digital domain when dealing with 16-bit audio.”

Actually the SMPTE standard is 0 VU = -20db on 1khz tone. EBU standard is 0 VU = -18db. The 0 VU = -12db is a standard that companies like Tascam tried to introduce but is in fact not the standard that you should work with both for field recording and post production as it doesn’t leave you with sufficient headroom on location and you must deliver correct reference and peak levels for broadcasters.

[David Roth Weiss] “I do prefer the technique Ty mentioned however, which keeps the second track available if needed. That way they’re muted, but a ProTools mixer has them if needed. It’s a pretty elegant solution…”

Yes please! In a sound post facility they can properly mix boom & lav. What sound best to you on FCP may not be the best so let the sound post experts decide.

Oh an btw lots of us don’t use ProTools so please don’t assume. Ask in advance what to do to best prepare a project for sound post. For example Fairlight have just introduced xml import from FCP (including picture) so a muted clip in FCP can be unmuted but if you OMF exported, that muted clip may not appear.

Do you mean record levels in the field or post production levels?

There are standards for post production broadcast levels which has been covered here a lot so a search of the forums will help. Even if you are making a DVD it would help to know what standard levels are so that your program has the right perceived loudness.

Are the render files on your hard drive? Have you tried reconnecting them?

Did you stay with the same version of FCP. A bit of info about versions and hardware might help us help you.

December 9, 2009 at 3:05 am in reply to: Client complaining about ProRes

Shot on DV, scaled up to HD and he complains about ProRes! That’s too funny.

The only problem with a film out is the originating codec. DV is poor SD. You might get a better result staying SD (uncompressed is easy in SD)and playing out to digi beta. Then scaling up using a Teranex or similar hi qual hardware scaler to HDCam. The loss is in the DV plus scaling in FCP (if that is what your workflow was), not the HD codec.

[Vadim Finkov] “And one more thing, please do not flash your experience out, it is sounds really funny. I think you need multiply X2 your experience to be where I was 10 years ago. No disrespect!”

Good luck vadim. I thought you came here to work out why you couldn’t do something and when I explained why you tell me I don’t know what I am talking about.

No disrespect? Seriously? You must think I am a total idiot. Also if you don’t like to teach people, then you won’t be much use to us lesser mortals on this forum. Shame to have all that experience and contribute nothing.
