None of the audio should be peaking to zero. Anything delivered to a broadcaster should not have peaks above -10dbfs.

Don’t just lift the VO levels by 10db as that may cause clipping. Look at your monitoring levels and the overall levels of your clips and try to leave some headroom.

Record for 0dbfs and you are asking for trouble. Anything with peaks will inevitably clip. Most pro studios would not have a VO peaking above -10dbfs and some may be even safer.

Don’t worry about the sequence settings saying 32 bit floating point. That is the internal processing in FCP only. Clips should be 16bit or 24bit 48Khz.

Dat machines record 16 bit btw.

The sync drift is likely to be .1%, the difference between 24 fps and 23.976 fps. You can try converting the speed on one long file and see if that is the correct slow down.

  • I don’t have experience with pulldown as I am blessed to live in the PAL world but a quick search of this forum should reveal some sage advice by the poor sods who are forced to deal with 29.97 to 23.976 conversion.

It is always a shame to hear that telecine has already been done to DV. By going straight to HD files, you don’t have to capture off tape so the injest tape machine is not an issue and the same files can be used in the offline and online.

You can’t afford not converting from h264 to ProRes. FCP doesn’t edit h264 natively. 30fps to 25 fps is going to be a problem, but the immediate problem is all your footage must be converted to ProRes 422 and the sound must be converted to 48khz.

If you choose to ignore this advice, which has been repeated here endlessly since the 5Dmk2 hit the streets, you will not be able to play the footage smoothly whilst editing. Search this forum for the best advice on how to go about converting your footage. The latest advice is to use the Log & Transfer plugin from Canon.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Also, 720p HD runs at 50 frames per second in PAL land, not 25 and only 25. ;)”

Yes but all broadcast is 25 regardless of what camera or edit frame rate you choose.

  • Surprisingly, the FCP manual is quite good at explaining Easy Setup. Also Shane Ross has tutorials about setting up workflow for FCP including advice on file naming and management of drives.

  • So long as it is done in a duplicate or new sequence.

There are some smart upscaling software and hardware devices for images. Most here would agree that expensive hardware scaling with a Teranex or similar gives the best results. Others swear by the upscaling in the Kona cards ans software like Innobits Video Purifier do high quality software upscaling with some smart noise reduction.

With sound it is possible to use high bit rate floating point processing to apply EQ and other processing without causing distortions introduced by rounding errors. This can improve the sound but the original frequency response and distortion is not changed.

Using the system drive for media is a totally no-no. If it is a separate internal sata then that should have enough speed but single drive systems are much more fragile than RAIDs with redundancy.

At the moment I have both an external fibre Channel RAID and an internal 3 drive RAID5 which can handle HD uncompressed easily.
