One more thing, I love the way Motion handles a lot of things, I just wish it was better. It’s the program I hate to love.

    Noah.
Not to be a buttinskie but, ;0)
Just because some Software Engineers have produced a beautiful master piece of software engineering doesn’t necessarily mean that it is useable. In most cases it’s the feedback that they get that allows them (if they listen) to make it practical as well.
Apples’ big thing is ease of use and intuitive interfaces. As software programs gets more robust and are directed too a smaller market (as video is compared to a mail program or web browser) It tends to loose that simplicity. Granted Motion has a learning curve as does After Effects, Shake and other complex programs, but there are certain defacto standards that compositors and effects artists have come to expect. and if these standards are not addressed then the learning curve gets steeper.
I’m not the ” because thats the way it’s always been done” type, but there are times when reinventing the wheel is not necessary.
    just a few thoughts.

  • Palettosis I knew I had something, where are the commercials Merk,Novardis,P&G Imclone??
Was it just me or did AE seem faster? I’m on a Dual2.5 g5 with 4 gigs ram and 6800ultra not as fast as demo using particles.
    Cool UI Yay!

    no,
I am just checking the files as they will be output to film and the lab uses AE to composite files.

    Here’s what I’m doing:

    1) create motion file
    2) add text and effect (directional blur and brightness)
    3) export tiff seq tif+alpha
    4) premultiply on
    5) bring into AE to check before sending to lab for output (the lab I’m using uses AE for compositing scanned film and my graphics layer to print)
    6) Alpha is smaller than color

    7) go back to motion and hit the “v” key to toggle between color and alpha lo and behold the alpha IS smaller than color.

    Project properties
8bit background color black 0% opacity

    Here is the kicker
    1) bring in a background into Motion and the effect looks correct

    2) bring into Combustion and click on “Premultiplied with” in footage controls effect looks correct

    3) Bring into AE (alpha shows up as straight)

load into composition alpha looks smaller

till you set the “mode” pull down to “Luminescent Premul” Voila!!!!
    effect looks correct!!

The communication between Motion and AE seems to be the problem.
There is no difference when I click on premultiply in AE interpret file dialog box ! (and yes I reloaded the footage).
Also When I bring the file into Photoshop the alpha appears small as well.

The question I still have is why when I have sent out files for the last 10+ years with alphas there has never been a problem.
I’ve gotten files with alphas and as well and no problems.
    I’m not that lucky ;/)??!!

anybody have any ideas why it works this way?

yeah, well thats a work around for something that should work right in the first place!
Go ahead and export a movie, and when the client wants to change the text or images go through the hoops again!!!!!!??????
What ever happened to ease of use???
    Think Differently!!

Fade in fade out behavior is broken drop shadows as well bleed through.
Mark Spencer I believe came up with using levels and keyframe the fade in and out through the Alpha channel. good luck

Look at the refurb page at the Apple store you may find something faster and cheaper.
same 1 year waranty and you can add Applecare if you want.
I have bought my last 5 G5’s from the refurb page. no problems.

    Scott,
Thanks for your input. I took your advice and reduced the % of mem Motion uses and things are a bit better, I guess the 8 gig ram upgrade is on it’s way.

I really wasn’t asking for help as much as venting my frustration at Apple for not dealing with what I consider the basics (drop shadow, navigation consistency, memory hogging (while the OS is so graceful with memory,), marquee selection of keyframes etc
