Sorry, I didn’t give credit where credit was due. I actually agree with Barry about the Edius.
Oh my Gawd I just started a new plot line to the soap opera!

This has been the most entertaining thread I’ve ever read! A veritable soap opera of twists and turns, complete with amazing character development, plot lines and a resolution that warms the heart. Beats the crap out of American Idol…and I didn’t even have to vote!
Scott, I agree with Mitch: If you want to keep your current setup then EDIUS is a pretty kickass program… not that I’ve used it. But in talking with those who have, and seeing it firsthand, it’s pretty cool.
However, I certainly wouldn’t discourage you from switching to FCP. DV magazine, this site and others have plenty of articles on the HVX200 and the editing workflow, and they almost all include FCP. I agree, it can produce hickups, but name me a system under $10,000 that doesn’t. In any case, mucho mas RAM, a good capture device (I’d recommend AJA) and a robust RAID setup and whatever problems you have will be minimal.

    Good luck,

Don’t feel bad…I’m an AE artist as well. You just answered the post that would have inevitably come later.
    Thanks for the reply,

The G-Raid from G Tech is also an outstanding choice! Been using one on a dual 2.7 G5 with an AJA IO LA device and it works like a dream.
Also, I totally agree with an earlier post – log clips and dig. selects. Whether you pay someone to be in the field or do it yourself back at the suite. With as much as you’re shooting it would save you a lot of headaches down the road.

    Good luck,

That is correct! You can’t use both on the same firewire bus. The AJA sucks up a majority of the bandwidth of the system’s firewire bus, leaving little to no room for the G-Raid. You need to purchase a separate firewire card.
The one you get from G-Technologies is a good one. We have two, one for our new G5 and one for our old dual-mirror G4 and they work great. Superior performance!

I just went though my first capture today and had problems until I made sure the HDV settings were chosen in the Easy Setup menu. Then it worked fine.
I hope that’s the answer for you.
Oh, the camera I’m diging from is the HDR-FX1.

Actually, this setup should work just fine! I have an almost identical setup (but with a dual mirror G4) and it runs like a dream. The G-Raid is a striped 0 array and has the juice to handle the throughput, just make sure it’s plugged into the new card with the IO on the G4’s main FW 400 input. Separation is key!
Have fun, it’s a great way to cut!

After fiercly defending Media 100 for over 6 years I’m finally moving my post to FCP exclusively. Mainly because FCP HD & Panther/Tiger finally gave me the stability I needed after suffering through the quirks of earlier versions. However, quirky or not, what’s made FCP such a force today is that Apple wasn’t afraid to throw their product out there and let the industry tell them how to perfect it. (The price doesn’t hurt too) I suspect Avid has enjoyed it’s “leader in the industry” status for so long that it may be hard for them to get their heads around this. But they do have the benefit of much market saturation.

Unfortunately for Media 100 they came out with their $75,000 masterpiece at the same time everyone else came out with their $999-2,000 masterpieces. All that hard work on R&D flushed due to bad market timing. And it’s only this year that they seemed to have figured it out, but now no one (myself included) cares. I saw their latest product at NAB and I left depressed, thinking what could have been if they’d introduced this FCP-like product 2 years ago (or even last year). The shame is, they still have the best codec on the market. What a waste!

Apple and FCP have shown that a truly great product can be made if you check your ego at the door…except when you’re at NAB. Then you gloat.

I’ve been doing a lot of research on this recently, and my company is looking at the Multibridge Extreme because it’s SD AND HD ready, as well as has all the inputs and outputs you need for Beta SP. AJA doesn’t have a unit that can take all the inputs/outputs and give both HD and SD. It’s one or the other. Or you can get component video out but not in.
Plus, I’ve heard good things about the Blackmagic codec.
