Also, if you’re going to be purchasing FCP Studio and not just FCP you’ll need a computer that has the ATI Radeon 9650 (I think this is the model) or later for Motion to work. It won’t install unless you have at least that. You can’t even try the demo version without it.

I’d give the processor as little to think about as possible. One file as opposed to, potentially, hundreds can only save you a headache or two. The way you’re doing it is good, especially if the renders end up as 10-bit DVCPRO 50. That’s good quality.

5.1.2 does seem to be an upgrade that’s creating a lot of unique problems for people. I upgraded two weeks ago (grudgingly) and I’m having overall system speed issues and times when the computer just doesn’t boot up.
Just Apple’s way of making us all feel like individuals, I guess.

Out of curiosity John, are you sure the settings for the timeline you’re dropping the 16:9 program into is a 4:3 sequence? Sometimes I’ve changed the sequence settings or changed the Easy Setup parameters but didn’t change them back. So your new sequences might not be 4:3.
I hope it’s as easy as that.

Is it just a Final Cut issue? Will any other programs run successfully with both cards installed?
Also, call LaCie and see if they have any insights/fixes to the problem.

    Good luck,

My latest version of FCP (5.1.2) exports Windows 9 files straight out of the timeline. I can’t recall if that’s standard or if we bought a plug-in. But even if it’s not we always used to use Cleaner, which works great and is fairly cheap and easy to use!
I wouldn’t hesitate to go FCP as Apple makes great deals for educators on both hardware AND software.

    Good luck,

I do this process you described (copying to a drive then importing) and it always imports overmodulated. Ususally I pull the level down to -12 or below, especially under VO, and it sounds fine. I also never usually have to render it, unless my timeline is getting up there in layers.
If you want, you can open the raw audio file in Quicktime and choose Export… and choose your new settings.
    Good luck.

I never thought reading the words “HDV cannot be played out of FCP via Firewire” could be so comforting, but after trying this for the last couple of days I can now give up the ghost and get something accomplished!
    Thanks for the quick response.

Also, the firewire connection is going to the system firewire port while the firewire 800 drive is on a separate card. So throughput shouldn’t be an issue.
    I can hear audio fine.

I hear the audio fine when digitizing but one of the things I think needs adjustment is the ability to SEE the audio meters when digitizing.
And in conjunction with that, an ABORT button when digitizing would also be ideal. Saved me many times when I edited on Media 100.
