  • 16:9 to 4:3 letterbox not working

I have a project with the edit done in 16:9 sequences, and have made several letterbox versions for client reviews by dropping 16:9 sequence into a 4:3 sequence. It was pretty straightforward. Now i have a final version, and whenever i drop the 16:9 sequence into the 4:3, it does not letterbox, it is stretced top and bottom to ffill 4:3 space. I’ve tried this several times, dropped all the clips from the existing 16:9 timeline into a new 16:9 sequence, then dropped that into a 4:3 with the same results. Any idea whats going on here? I’m using FCP HD 4.5, all in and out via firewire and DV settings.

    hi-
try dropping the 16:9 into the 4:3 sequence then open the motion tab for the 16:9 sequence in the viewer. Under distort there’s a tool to alter the aspect – I believe you can set this to -33 and presto its stretched to widescreen.

    OR

you could drop some raw anamorphic footage into the 4:3 – make sure it letterboxes – then copy it. delete it, drop in yr 16:9 sequence and paste attributes. select the distort and basic motion check-boxes and presto…

Or you can change the motion tab distort settings in the 4:3 sequence after you’ve dropped in the anamorphic material.

This might (might) give you what you need…

Out of curiosity John, are you sure the settings for the timeline you’re dropping the 16:9 program into is a 4:3 sequence? Sometimes I’ve changed the sequence settings or changed the Easy Setup parameters but didn’t change them back. So your new sequences might not be 4:3.
I hope it’s as easy as that.

Yes, I thought of that too, but when I select the sequence in the browser and check settings, it says 4:3. As suggested above, I dropped a 16:9 clip in the 4:3 sequence, it letterboxed, copied clip and pasted attributes (distort) on the 16:9 sequence and it worked. Still don’t know why I had the problem. I have the 5.0 upgrade, and 10.4 ready to install, just needed to finish this project so I’m soon off to greener pastures. Thanks to all (once again) for the help and solutions.

I needed to reformat 16:9 anamorphic footage into a 4:3 timeline on final cut. This worked for me… (Viewer > Video Tab > Distort > Aspect Ratio > -33 )
