  • how to capture HDV?

Posted by Teabgs on November 7, 2005 at 6:59 pm

Hey everyone. here’s my problem: I’m trying to import some HDV footage from a Sony HVR-Z1U camera and it isnt being recognized in FCP. I also tried with a Sony CMOS but it doesnt show up either. I’ve tried changing the settings in FCP for capturing but nothing seems to work. I cant even get picture to show up with it set to non-controllable device. This is FCP 5.0.1 if it matters and on a dual 2Ghz G5. If anyone has anything to suggest that I try please let me know.

    Thank you so much!

I just went though my first capture today and had problems until I made sure the HDV settings were chosen in the Easy Setup menu. Then it worked fine.
I hope that’s the answer for you.
Oh, the camera I’m diging from is the HDR-FX1.

You are right Bugsy. The Easy Setup for HDV 1080i makes the process a no-brainer.

Thanks for the replies. You are right, the easy setup makes it easy, although after that didn’t work I posted here. It turned out to be the AJA box connected to the G5… should have thought not to try having both connected at the same time, but I just didn’t think about it. Would have saved a few hours too, oh well. Batch capturing as I type. Thanks!

    Bugsy,
Just bought an HDR-FX1 along with new Apple FCP Studio system.

Am curious about how others are using such equipment. Since I ran out of dough for a HDV deck, I plan on hooking the FX1 directly to the G5, and capture direct. Is this how you’re doing it now?
I’ve heard this is not a recommended approach as the footage recorded on the camera directly is too compressed and you lose too much to output a high-quality finished product.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    JB
