Discovery have confirmed that the 900 is ok for HD acquisition, unrestricted in all its recording modes.

If you are editing in pal country/ environment shoot 25p.
If you are editing in NTSC land shoot 23.98.

We have been watching USA/Europe Europe/USA off speed programmes for decades without suffering.

If the programmes have to have identical running lengths then you’ll need a standards converter to merg or add frames, in this scenario audio is not effected.
If programme does not have to have a specific running time then simply playout the 23.98 at 25p with a audio pitch change and make a 25p master.

If you are shooting music then the off speed solution can get up the nose of muscians.

Comparing Varicam and 900 shooting 720p is one thing but the 900 camera can also do 1080i,
where it records all 1280×720 pixels by upsampling to (1440×1080 when shooting 25p/50i) rather than subsampling 960×720 at 720p.

    Thanks Jeff,
I’ll give the man a call.
My enquires are regarding content for Discovery HD channel, which as I undersatand it have different standards to other Disco channels.
Has the 900 been accepted for Disco HD?

Issues in UK are lack of NLE support for 720p 25/50 frame rates. So we need to shoot USA frame rates which makes life complicated for offline viewing ect.

    cheers

SInce the f350 does not have a progressve ccd and incamera processing converts it to progressive there is a real loss of resolution in progressive mode as well as a slight delay in viewfinder.

This is not the best camera for filmout because of this.
May I suggest you test shooting interlace then deinterlace in post, this may be better than shooting progresive in camera (probably not but worth a try)

Also if you have a lot of static wide shots of landscapes city scapes ect consider shooting these in interlace mode as interlace movement is not noticible in a static frame with small movements happening within frame.

Doing any of the above needs agreement with post house!
    Get the best lens possible.
Let us know if you try any of the above.
I would think a true progressive digital SD camera with HD lens or the 720p cameras from Panasonic would deliver a more pleasing result (for similar money?)

No question 2/3 inch camera with 50mb is on the way, it will not be backward compatable with existing players.

The big question is what will be the pixel count of the ccd.
If the new camera is to cost an extra $10k dont expect too much more htna the current model asSOny will take an extra $9k in profit!

In Europe the 330 and 350 are not being adopted much by the mainstream rental companies as they have to buy a new set of 1/2 inch lenses.
I understand that Canon and Fuji are somewhat deflated by the less than expected sales of their 1/2 inch lenses.

I think there is a future in 1/2 inch lens and camera format for news, issues to solve are so they can use a 1920×1080 pixels are senitivity of small ccds and of course further development of lenses that can deliver to such small pixels. (I assume current lenses will fall short but until a 1920×1080 1/2 inch chip comes along we’ll never know?)

September 17, 2006 at 8:13 am in reply to: f900 software fault

    Hi Tony,

Will mention it to the UK product manager who has just raised an engineering bulletin about the assignable gain switch fault, he can do another one for the f900R!

Very poor show that the end user has to find these faults out in isolation and at their own expense!

What is the situation in the states? over here so I’m told, the camera is sold by resellers with an agreed inbuilt $$ figure to cover the resellers in-house technicians labour for warrenty claims . So buy a camera for $80k and lets say $1k (guess) has been kept aside to pay the labour of potential warrenty claims as Sony doesn’t want to deal direct with the customer and resellers have bases geographically closer.

The inheret problem is that resellers are hardly going to call up every customer to say come in with your camera so our engneer can spend 2 hours updating your software or fixing what they regard, as a minor fault. Every call they make will cost them money.

Keep them in the dark seems to be the practice.

Is this the case in the states? other regions?
