Of everything out there Lightworks intrigues me the most. Although I am not that familiar with it I like the philosophy of basic editing with less keystrokes. If it can handle the various codecs, have a good titler and plugin support, not to mention stability I am there. I don’t know why but have a good feeling in my gut about Lightworks.

We are doing everything from 30 second spots to full length broadcast docs, with a spattering of corporate videos for the web, dvd, events etc. We do not shoot or cut much above 1080p.

You have to wonder how much damage has been done to the Apple brand. I know we are not as many as iphone users but FCP was in some ways a flagship app that showcased apple technology. It is important to their brand. Perhaps this is all good. I never liked companies that got too big and too arrogant. I am sure there is someone out there lurking right now developing the killer editing application that we will all be using in a few years. I bet it won’t be one of the three A’s.

I have never had a problem with HDV or XDCam as long as I am cutting straight footage. Once I begin adding filters or layers it is all over. FCP crashes continuously. A ProRes timeline and SafeRT helps if you render before playback.

Thanks to both of you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded both demos and evaluated them. CD Finer at $39.95 has a more modern interface but seems to scan much slower. I believe this is because it is capturing more info, maybe even thumbnails of photos etc. DiskTracker is very fast but seems much simpler in its interface and features. Both do the job. Now I can’t decide which one to use.

Thanks again for these recommendations. These apps really take a lot of the drudgery out of searching the archives.

I just did this. I nested a clip and applied a filter to the nested clip. Worked great. In my case I had a SD clip in an HD sequence. I wanted the filter (SugarFX HUD) rendered in HD not SD. I would expect this to work with a vignette as well.

(I reserve the right to be wrong)

  • I think I have found a work around for this issue. You must use the motion tab to set your keyframe values for scale. Do not use the handles in the Canvas. Make sure that the starting value is a round number and not a decimal. This worked for me. My still moves now render at a beautiful quality with no stair stepping etc. All other settings are just set to “normal.” I think this issue might be similiar to the problem one encounters in trying to do a credit roll with an off speed with the resulting flicker.

  • I have exactly the same problem. Unrendered stills (preview) animate perfectly and look great but when rendered they seem to look downrezed and missing a field. This is with any codec. This is also a recent problem since upgrading to FCP 6.04. It does not seem to be a settings issue. My stills are not oversized but I do think it is a bug in how FCP scales stills in motion. FCP did not have this problem before as I have been animated moves on stills for seven years and have just recently run into this issue.

I an having this same problem. Clicking on anything in Edit to tape starts the beach ball for around 15 seconds. It seems to be related to RS422 serial port issue using a Kona LHe. Firewire is OK.
