Archiving tapeless media and projects seems to be a new issue these days. Although not ideal, I am presently archiving my finished projects to two backup bare hard drives. I presently have over 20 500GB to 1TB bare hard drives and invariably I need to load them into my Weibetech enclosure to see what’s on them. Not too efficient. It would be great to have an app that would take a snapshot of the director/folder/file structure for each drive and make it a searchable database so I can easily search what I need without mounting multiple disks. Years ago I used Retrospect to do this when I backed up to DLT. Now I am looking for something that can do this with already archived disks. Has anyone a solution, software recommend, or workflow suggestion for this?

    Thanks,

    Michael

Someone on here recommended CD Finder on here to me.

At my current job, we don’t have the manpower or time to thoroughly log out media the way you would in FIle Maker Pro. We just wanted to be able to look through our Drobos without having to swap 8 drives every time we want to look at a new set. CD Finder was the perfect solution. It simply catalogs your storage devices. After you have everything catalog, all you ever have to do is open CD Finder and search for what you want. They have tutorials on their site that show how simple it is. It’s a real time saver at my work.

At a SFCutters presentation on archiving last fall, Chris Fenwick recommended Disk Tracker ($30) for exactly that.

Thanks to both of you. This is exactly what I was looking for. I downloaded both demos and evaluated them. CD Finer at $39.95 has a more modern interface but seems to scan much slower. I believe this is because it is capturing more info, maybe even thumbnails of photos etc. DiskTracker is very fast but seems much simpler in its interface and features. Both do the job. Now I can’t decide which one to use.

Thanks again for these recommendations. These apps really take a lot of the drudgery out of searching the archives.
