I was told yesterday by the rental house that there isn’t a deck that will play back Canon tapes. We had to rent a camera to use as a deck to get the tapes in. There is apparently a Sony deck in the works that will play both, but it won’t be out until the end of the year or so.

Ok, that seems very strange to me. How can it not be either one? If it’s shooting in 24 frames… oh man, this is blowing my mind.

I have no complaints about the image quality. I haven’t really been able to scrutinize the image yet as I’d kind of like to get home at a somewhat decent hour tonight. I’ll post some notes on it in the morning.

    So far, it’s gorgeous

    I’m assuming as much.

You know, I’m all for competition and everything, but can we just have one damn format?

It’s a beauty of a camera. I’m looking at the footage now and it looks better than the stuff that was shot on the F900s.

No RS-422. Looks like I’ll have to run it on manual.

that’s strange. My other response didn’t post.

So I’m going in using the KonaLH. So far so good. I’m at least seeing it.

Ok… that’s working. Kind of. Any idea how or if I can have deck control or am I SOL?

  • I ended up just doing an analog transfer to DVCam. It’s been a bitch (all real-time transfer) but there were so many glitches on these stupid DVDs that bringing them in through slipstream ended up giving me only 3 minutes of the 30 minutes that were on the disc. But anyway, at least this way we have a solid source to work from as opposed to this horrible consumer crap.

Problem solved. turns out it really really helps when the producers tell you the actual frame rate of the tapes and not the wrong one. They were insistent that it was 29.97, when it was actually 23.98. Then they were like, “Oh yeah, it’s 24P.” So frustrating.

So I had to go into the menu and set it up for 23.98 with PD (not sure what that means) because just regular 23.98 didn’t work. But, finally, I got it all digitized. Thanks so much for your help. Let me know if you have any other clarifications on what worked, but that was it.

There’s a firewire port on the back of this deck. I’ve tried going over firewire and using every setting I could imagine, but it’s still not working. You don’t think it’s possible that there’s anything wrong with the tapes?

There’s a button on the front that says LTC/VITC. When it’s playing I can toggle between the two, but it looks like I can’t pick both. Switched between them and got the same result. The LTC letters flash on the screen during playback. That’s bad, right?
