Do dark areas get noisy or grainy? Is this fixed in post? My question is about the dark portion of the frame, it seems even the best cameras need light to produce a solid image. I am using a Sony F350 if that helps.

    Update,

Test is still jagged. Can you give tips for creating text. I try to use fonts that are condusive for video just like with SD. I am creating them at 1920 by 1080. What dpi should I use (72dpi 150dpi?) They look pretty good in the uncompressed timeline but I still can see extreamly tiny jagged edges.

I think the problem is in the downconversion. I attempted the method that you outlined without much luck. Also, when encoding, should I use open or closed GOP.

I have been a coorperate video producer/editor for over 12 years but my experience has been with SD projects. Getting HD to DVD and making it look crisp and clear is a challenge. Maybe you could recommend some good materials to read.

    Thanks,

    Can you clarify this:

“export with quicktime conversion, in those options set it to uncompressed or prores if your on fcp 6 and designate the size as 720×480, 16×9 (for anamorphic) 4×3 if you don’t want anamorphic, then take THAT exported file and use compressor on it.”

If I am using a DVC Pro Hd 16×9 timeline to start with and change setting to uncompressed and I export with Quicktime conversion by selecting:

    Format – Quicktime Movie
    Options – Video
    Settings – uncompressed 10 bit -4:2:2
Size – I don’t want to use current, so I must select Custom
for this do I put 720×405 or 720×480?
    I do not see a 16×9 default.

Sorry for all the questions, I am attempting the process now and want to get it right.

Thanks for your reply. Can you suggest compressor settings? For example, if size is not an issue (most programs are 5 min. to 30 min.) would you use CBR or VBR. Also, in your experience, what is the highest bit rate before I might run into problems (I usually max at about 8.3 mbps).

Can you make any other sugggestions in regard to compressor in order to improve quality.

That was not the problem. I think it must be the mic. I was thinking about it last night and remembered that this did happen once on my DSR400, so it is not probable that it could happen on two cameras. Also, attempted using different XLR cables with no improvment. Hate to send my mic in for repair (it is only a few months old but still probably under war.)

It is my plan to upgrade soon but I have not had the time. I have a coorporate shoot tomorrow and everyone wants to use the new format and thus all the questions.

Can you give a brief explanation of a comment you made in a previous post.

    1080i60
    1080i59.94
    1080i30
1080i29.97 all mean the same thing in this context

Therefore, you would generally capture 1080i60 to DVCPRO HD. There is most likely an “Easy Setup” for this.

What do you mean by “all mean the same thing in this context”?

And I do not have an easy setup for 1080i60 but I do have a Kona 1080i30 DVC pro setup.

Also, would it be obvious if I were using a wrong setting. Or would it just not work at all. Things seem to work with the Kona 1080i/29.97 DVC Pro easy setup. I am sure I will catch on in the upcomming weeks, just need to get the ball rolling.

    Nate,

I was able to capture using easy setup for a Kona LH 1080i/29.97 Everything looked pretty good but I was wondering if (being that I shot at 24P) I am getting the smoothest true 24P playback in a 29.97 sequence. I am new to HD and apologise for the newbe questions in advance.

Also if I accuire in 24P, can I export a self contained movie to compressor as usual and import the resulting MPEG2 file in order to create a standard def. DVD with DVD Studio Pro 4. Or are there more steps involved?
