Very interesting stuff Joe, thanks. I did keep the cache on a separate disk most of the time, but the library remained on the same drive as the media. Will keep that in mind for future projects if the problem should arise again. Still, seems like compound clips used in a massive way seem to be the main problem. I had already had that problem in another project which was similarly setup (again, prior to my joining the project)…I know it’s a pretty specific setup we had, but seems like a shame FCPX doesn’t provide the ability to create sync clips from the timeline. Well, I guess you can’t have everything…
-
But to be honest I started using snapshots only after I started noticing the problem getting worse. Maybe if I had done it from the get go it could have made things better…

Not working on it any longer, finished a while ago, but we had nothing fancy, regular HDD at 7200rpm through USB 3, was enough for HD material and sound, and generally worked fine, except for the aforementioned issue. Probably SSDs and thunderbolt would’ve helped a little but the issue did seem to come more from the way X was handling the projects.

So it does seem to confirm compounds were the problem. I did use snapshots but even so the problem persisted.

Gave it a look but it does seem to be Premiere only…
Thanks still, you never know when such a piece of info might come in handy! -
Thanks Jari, I had not thought about this option.
It used to be doable through Ichat and worked not too bad…
But since Ichat’s transformation into messages I had not tried it.
Checked it out quickly and there does seem to be a screen sharing option
still there so I will surely give it a try! -
Thanks Bill, I had tried Skype a couple years back but of ourse internet bandwith
an connection were not as good as now.
Good to see you’ve found it reliable!
Will sure try it again.
Still curious about other options -
Thanks for your replies Mark.
I’m not looking for collaboration tools, just want the director to see
what I’m doing in realtime.
He also has a copy of the media and project so I can send it
and he can easily relink and watch if he needs to review
in better quality, but that is also slower and doesn’t allow
for instant feedback and a fluid conversation to get going.
This is a very different process from that of client reviews in corporate work,
which it seems is what you do if I’m not mistaken?
Here we need to watch, tweak and reflect together on the different paths
we can take at any given point; it is also true it’s the directors’ first film
and we are at an advanced stage of the edit
so we need to work together.
Hence the question about streaming the actual edit session
and feeding him my audio and video.
Heard about zoom, skype and evercast
and was hoping to get some feedback from people having tried it recently.
I actually did it myself through skype a couple years ago
and although it was workable it quickly became a hassle.
Was wondering about recent progress in the area… -

It is impossible to port these data over to the synched clip level because you will have multiple values and possibly conflicts.”
Ronny, I get your point, but I’m sure it wouldn’t be that hard to imagine
a way of resolving such conflicts.
There could for instance be a window asking you
which metadata you wish to be ported to the sync clip level.
Or a special command to extract a given set of metadata (such as scene and take info)
out of the sound clips and into the synced ones.
Would be a useful feature. -

Although Joe’s tips are certainly welcome,
they are more kind of workarounds around
what seems to me a poor UI implementation
that is unintuitive and contrary to most of the FCPX experience.
It is not that I wish it to be more like Avid or Premiere or Fcp 7,
on the contrary, it’s that I want it to be better in the way it works.
In this precise example it seems to me it wouldn’t be
difficult to implement a more visible playhead,
to have a clip highlighted or better yet
occupy the first position in the clips in the browser when matchframed to,
or even be the only clip that shows for a moment after the matchframe…
Seems there could be many ways to enhance the user experience in that regard,
simple ways to make an already intuitive UI even more intuitive
for EVERY user right of the bat, not just me…And the same things could be argued about most of the points I raised.
There are many little enhancements FCPX could get
that would make the experience so much better for most users.Oh, but I keep forgetting, instead of listening and thinking about
how we could all help FCPX get better,
you seem to only be able to hear criticism as some kind of strange personal attack
and seem unable to get passed it…Well, hopefully FCPX engineers will listen a little
and make some enhancements over time for all the editors
that use and love the program but keep wishing
it got better. And yes, I have sent feedback.
