Glad to help, but I don’t know if I’m qualified enough to say how much work such a script would take. The logic of what the program would be required to do seems pretty basic. I’d imagine an experienced programmer could do it in a day or two. Take what I say with a grain of salt! I may be totally off base and it turns out this is really hard to do.

There is tons of information on the web about learning how to program, if you are interested. Most of what I know, I found through google. If you are really interested, people often recommend starting with an “easier” language like python. However, if you’ve never even opened a terminal window, you may be in for a pretty serious time commitment. Good luck!

Not sure how to respond. I doubt you’d find anybody who’d work on this for free, unless they themselves need a product like this or think they can sell it to enough people to recoup their time. Have you tried contacting Automatic Duck?

I don’t think a filter could do this, but you could write a little program or shell script to do this to an FCP xml file. Reimport the xml file, then export the OMF.

However, in my personal experience with FCP 4.1.1, I’ve found that XML re-importing is not 100% reliable. Other people’s mileage may vary.

I’ve also had some luck doing this in Compressor. Set the “crop” to 2 pixels off the top and 4 pixels off the bottom. Set the Frame Size to “100% of source.” Make sure to test on some short clips with lots of motion and look at the results on an NTSC (or PAL) monitor.

August 12, 2005 at 9:26 pm in reply to: FCP QT Still export — what’s the color profile?

I believe this has more to do with the formats you are using to round trip the images, rather than color profile settings. What are your settings?

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the best practice is to turn off color management in photoshop while you are working with images intended for video output. As Arnie says, YUV to RGB to YUV translation is never transparent. You may want to try the “bitjazz” codecs, (www.bitjazz.com) they seem to promise very accurate YUV to RGB translation. I haven’t tried these myself, but would be inerested to hear what your experience is, if you go this route.

July 19, 2005 at 5:19 pm in reply to: long renders on edit to tape: What is going on?

I’m definitely sure everything is rendered. We configure all our workstations from the start so that “render all” is set to render every item. On top of that, there are no real time capable effects in the timeline anyway. What’s interesting is if you leave items unrendered in the timeline, than select “edit to tape,” FCP will make two render passes. The first renders the outstanding items in the timeline (these render files will be preserved after the edit to tape). After, FCP does this mysterious second pass, which was the subject of my initial post.

July 15, 2005 at 6:48 pm in reply to: usr/share/terminfo/75/unknown

I’ve seen this happen a lot. Sometimes a file loses its connection to the original media and will list its source path as “unknown”

When you tried to reconnect the file, it automatically searched your hard drive and found a file called “unknown.” This file is normally hidden and is part of the system install, there is nothing wrong with it being there.

You need to check the name of the bad clip in the timeline, select “reconnect media” and enable “select file manually”. In the dialog box that comes up, turn off “matched name only” and manually locate the file on your hard drive and reconnect.

I don’t know what causes this situation to happen, but I know it usually is fairly easy to fix with the above method.

The other error you mentioned is called a “kernel panic,” (Try googling it). If it just happened once, you probably don’t need to do anything, but if it starts occuring more frequently, something may probably wrong with your machine.

May 30, 2005 at 8:00 pm in reply to: trying to import bwf files into FCP

I don’t have any experience with bwf files, so this is a long shot. Have you checked the file permissions? Do a “get info” on your local file (command-i), toggle down “ownership & permissions>details…” and make sure everything is set to read/write. Even though the files are on your local drive, there is a small chance they are “locked.”

    hope this helps,

May 30, 2005 at 5:42 pm in reply to: Pro Application Support 3.0

Yeah I agree, If it ain’t broke, why fix it?

Apple’s documentation did mention some “user interface reliability” improvements, so I was hoping the update may fix some quirks we are noticing with snapping functionality and shift-constrain dragging, etc (does this fall under the “user interface” umbrella?).

We aren’t running HD mainly because the “desktop preview” isn’t compatible with the Aurora mjpeg codec we are using. We do use it on our High Def theatre with a Kona2 card, using the 10bit UC codec.

    cheers,
